Title: Drive in movies
Post by: Winiroo on June 13, 2008, 10:20:39 pm: Can you remember what the last movie you saw at a drive in was?

The last one I saw was Witchboard in 1986. The first one I remember seeing was Jaws or maybe Raggedy Ann & Andy?
It was a long time ago I cant remember.

Twin Cities Drive in outside of downtown Fort Worth on the way to Dallas on !-30...only, it was a Tollway back then.

Twin meant that there were two screens with the concession stand in the middle. You could go through the concession stand and watch the other movie if you wanted as there were benches with those speakers that hung on these poles up front and....<.< ....>.> ....o.o ...

.don't tell Mom.... but the other side usually showed what was termed as "Rated X" and would show what is now soft core back then hard core. :o

"where have you been?"..oh..."there was a long line ..... ::)

Also, what was going on in the back seat of the cars was WAAyy more interesting than the movie!.... :P

We went to the drive-in and initially we were joking and having fun but then when the sex started it became very uncomfortable. I don't think my being a closeted homosexual had anything to do with it. It was just weird all the way around. We didn't even get halfway through the movie before leaving.

There is a drive-inn here in Sac well Rancho Cordova. I can't remember what I saw there though....

Post by: minismom on June 14, 2008, 08:00:26 am: There's a drive-in theatre not far from where we used to live in Parkersburg that we frequented, but i can't remember what we watched. There's also a drive-in near Shinnston, about 40 minutes from us. It usually shows double features during the summer. We haven't been there, yet. It's WAY too hot to sit in a car in the blazing sun. Some of our city parks have pool theatres where you can bring your floatie, sit in the pool, and watch a movie (usually Jaws).

When I was older a friend and I went and we went around to all the poles that people used to have to drive up to to listen to the movie and collecting all the change that they dropped.

And while there's still one drive-in in the metro Atlanta area, I do remember one back in the 70s whose marquee you could see from the highway. The funniest marquee sign they had was:

I DRINK YOUR BLOOD
VISIT OUR NEW CONCESSION STAND

Now it's just a 24-screen multiplex. Sigh.

they used to sell these huge, like foot long, boerewors there... i can remember the coriander-y smell, &feeling very hard done by cos i wasn[t allowed to have one

They had an X-rated drive in called Diamond State Drive in and I've always liked diamonds so I went with friends. The children who lived in the neighborhood would hang around the fences and watch the movies ;D Have the best day

Post by: Miss Philicia on June 14, 2008, 04:12:50 pm: For some reason there were no drive in theaters where I grew up. I'm sure there were laws against such things, as they didn't even allow billboards. McDonald's had to come up with a miniature version of their golden arches there.

So, I've only been to such a place once in my life and have no clue what movie I saw.

We get out the lawn chairs, drinks, popcorn and bug repellent and make an evening of it. Nice summer fun.

I do recall seeing one somewhere off of the highway on one of my drives to Houston.

The drive in experience is an interesting memory. I've grown to be spoiled with airconditioning. I'm not sure if I could really enjoy going to a drive in now unless it was cool outside.

I was about to hit post and I had another thought. Growing up drive in's where safer to attend with my father. Him being a military man he was strict about behavior in a theatre. Of course now I am also.
I recall him standing up during a movie and yelling at some child to shut the hell up and watch the movie. LOL
I don't remember the movie but it must have been in the late 70's early 80's.

Thanks for humoring my trip down memory lane. ;)

there is no way any such thing would be legal or allowed in Aus.
Technically, you can only legally buy x-rated material in the ACT and NT (I think that is still the case), and even then, it is very vanilla. anything that includes any fetish or hint of coercion is a big no no here - but of course, where there is a will there is a way.

edited to add: I cannot remember the last movie i saw at the drive-in, but seem to recall that "now you see him, now you don't" with Kurt Russell was the first i can remember seeing at a drive in. i don't think any drive-in's exist in Sydney today, but i could be wrong.

As far as the people living near the X-rated drive-in's generally the lower classes of the trailer parks have little sway with local zoning ordinances.

This was a rather difficult neck turner as the screens were angled at a slight tilt from the freeway to prevent people from parking along the side of the road to catch a free show.

:) We don't have anymore drive-in theaters here in Pinellas County. But they still have one in Tampa. It's a four screen drive in theater. On Saturdays, in the daytime , it is used as a swap shop ! It's called the Fun-lan drive -in ! Been there...

8) If your already there for the flea market, how do they determine who pays? or is it an all day ticket for market and movie? I love flea markets. Is it any good?

The flea market is free. There is no parking of the vehicles on the theater property.There are other outside lots for that.The only cars in the drive-in itself are those that are selling stuff. After the flea market closes ( by 4:00)you must pay to get your car inside to watch the movies, at movie time. :) Got to go through the gate, just like the old drive in movies. ( except this time nobody's hiding in the trunk ! :D

I think it got so bad at one summer that they actually did inspections on the way in.

Sometimes, you could walk along the exit drive and sneak in that way, but you had no car to sit in, unless some friends were already there.Then, there were benches at the front with speakers hanging on poles.

This soon made them issue speakers when you entered the drive in. ::) In the winter you could rent a small heater that plugged into the cigarette lighter.

Oh yes, I remember the heaters. And you had to roll down your window a crack to hang those cast iron speakers. :)

I think when I was around 17, I cut two speakers off the pole so I could mount them at the rear ! ::) I needed rear speakers at the time !! Now you just tune your car radio !!

There is something about watching a movie in 95 degree heat and humidity that gives a heat index of over 100. Seriously if you catch a show in late May early June when the weather is pleasant it is a great way spend an evening.

The very first movie I remember seeing at a drive-in was Walk Tall or possibly Patton. Who knows it could have been a macho he-man double feature night.

I totally remember that place.
The only other ones I remember was one in Cockerel hill. Last time I saw it they turned it into a mexican flea market.
One was in Grand Prairie on the Tarrant county line but that was torn down and turned into some business building.
There was one somewhere around Cedar Hill in the 80's but I don't remember much about that aside from the back seat and how my date had bad breath and roaming hands. And how much I'd like to kill my girlfriend in the front seat for dragging me into this one.

The best drive-in I remember was the Pike in Fort Worth. On the screen tower was a huge painted mural of cowboys on the range at sundown. It had been trimmed with animated neon. One cowboy moved a skillet back and forth over flickering flames, another on horseback twirled a lasso.

Inside, at the foot of the screen, was a playground, with a slide, swings, see-saw, jungle gym, and—what was that thing called, the round metal platform that spun around so fast? I haven’t seen one in years. Maybe they stopped making them. Too many kids jumping or falling off and getting hurt. Too dangerous, I guess. But it sure was fun.

We would play on the playground till the screen lit up with the first cartoon. At the first sight of Woody Woodpecker and the sound of his cackle echoing from all the window speakers, all the kids would scream with delight. Then the moms and dads would herd us back to the cars, and we would watch cartoons, not on a small screen in black-and-white the way we saw them at home, but huge and blazing with color. Then the movies would start. Technicolor John Wayne epics, Hercules, Forbidden Planet. And the smells from the snack bar, popcorn and hot dogs, wafting through the summer night, and the distant sigh of highway traffic while the movies played. It was wonderful ...

OMG - I would so totally love to go! Picture it: you could go with some friends and get all dressed up like Dirk Diggler and Roller Girl! It would be the MOST!
