Sawadee Khrap Sanitex :)

First can i say i love your country (even though i contracted HIV there!).

If your interested in possible cures have a look at the Research News and Studies thread: http://forums.poz.com/index.php?board=9.0

There is plenty of discussion about new scientific developments that will lead to at the least much better treatments in the future or even eventually a cure.

of course there is tons of money to be made with a cure
tons and tons of money will be made even by any company that has slightly better meds with less side effects
a cure will be found
yes i do think that new meds, gene therapies, vaccines and meds that modifiy protein expression will completely solve this disease in next 5-7 years max, it may take another 3-5 years to get the treatment to everyone in usa who needs it, cause first they will give to the most sick , resistant virus people.
and they will want to watch for long term side effects before giving it to everyone
there are just too many huge science discoveries every week to stop the advance of science

i have to believe this or i could not go on...

I try not to think that far ahead.  I just make life out to be little manageable periods of time instead of 'forever' thinking.

That crossed my mind and I too wondered whether meds could "cure" hiv in the long term.
Probably not the current drugs, but newer ones might do that someday.
It can take years to determine if a new drug actually cures something. With no reoccurrence.
My partner is neg, but he had his own problems.
He came down with CML Leukemia in 2005, and luckily there was a new drug just approved that
targeted CML Leukemia, a rare form of Leukemia.
This drug is called Glivec.
Like a lot of hiv meds, this is a very new drug and no long term info is known on it.
Glivec is very effective. They call it a magic bullet in how it targets CML.
Recently, its been discovered that Glivec may actually "cure" CML.
Some users that have been on it for 5+ years and have had no signs of active
CML, were taken off Glivec and stayed in remission.

So, if this can happen with CML Leukemia, with this new drug once only thought to be a treatment,
I have hopes it can be done with hiv virus too. Lets hope so.
Diag Sept 2005 VL 1mill, CD4 85, 3%, weight 143# (195# was normal)
Feb 2021, undetectable, weight 215#

I know we all want to hear the word, "cure".

The issue is there are two avenues of this discussion.

Vaccines that prevent transmission and infection of HIV as a cure.

and

A treatment for those who are already infected.

For those of us who are already infected, having a therapy that can control HIV from its effects that has few side effects, can be administered occassionally such as a therapeutic vaccine or genetically engineered reconstituted immune system could be considered a kind of cure, if it were to be a permanent solution.

I'm not trying to squash hope here. The point is often cloudy when we look at how we interpret the word "cure".

Here is an example. if we can get HIV to be like Genital Herpes, where it can be knocked down during occasional flare ups through a short series of tolerable pills, some might consider that an effective treatment and be satisfied that we have reach that type of "managable" condition.

Now I know that Herpes shouldn't be underestimated as there are links to cancer and the like, but for millions of people, that's what we have to cope with a viral infection that the body can't quite clear and we have to learn to live with.

That is quite honestly my expectation, that we will continue to have new treatments developed based upon the recent genome research on the virusl. By unlocking the secrets to HIV, find new and novel ways to attack the virus by either:

Blocking the Virus from attaching to Cells.
Interrupting the Virus from transmitting its RNA into Cells
Disrupting the replication of HIV by scrambling the DNA sequence - Forced Mutation
Fooling the Virus into an Active State prior to Cell Attachment
Fooling the Virus to Deactivate...
Training or activating the Immune System to "see" already present HIV and kill the virus

etc.

I am optimistic that treatment based upon these avenues will be arriving. With the last item being the most challenging, as all the vaccine research done to date would indicate.

definitely there will be a cure very soon, hang in there
look at all the new discoveries just in the last 2 months!!!
more hiv discoveries in last 2 months than ever discovered for any disease
why
because of human genome, robot testing systems that can test tens of thousands of ideas in tiny test tubes,
because of new gene sequencing techniques like siRNA
which helped discover 273 new proteins
yes yes yes
a cure will be found soon
because
china has a billion smart people some of the best of whom are at oxford, harvard, UCSF etc and at 20 top chinese univ.
all of these peoples brains are competing with usa and europe geniuses to find an answer and win the nobel prize
that is what scientists live for is the fame and respect of thier peers, it is like a beauty contest of who has the sexiest brain
they are so so close now
truly
now with gene therapies of every type
there is a guy in my support group who was in a gene therapy trial and he has been off meds for 2 years
check out bimazek posts  -- me
ZDRN1 gene is new and just discovered it is the gene that makes all hiv slow progressors not get sick from hiv
just discovered 2 months ago
