Positive (?) Clearview results, negative OraQuix results
« on: June 30, 2015, 06:17:34 pm »
Hello all,

This is my first post  :)
I was just in a free clinic today getting my routine HIV test. After about 5 minutes, the Clearview (blood) test showed one line PLUS another faint line. To be certain, they did the test again and went back with the same results. I decided to go to my physician's office the same day and she did the OraQuix (oral mucous) test, which came back negative after 20 minutes. I searched around the forum and did not find anything that resembled my situation. My question is, how definitive are the 2 faint lines to determine if I am HIV positive? I had my doctor order a blood test to definitively confirm my status, but I am definitely very scared with the fact that a line, no matter how faint, even popped up. I have been reading different things -- others saying that a line needs to be SOLID and others saying that a line is a line, no matter what. How much weight should I place on the third test? Being it an oral mucous test, shouldn't it be less sensitive?

Additional tests I had prior to today:
Blood - Late 01/2015
Rapid - Late 02/2015
Blood - Mid 03/2015
Rapid - Mid 05/2015
I know this is a lot, but I contracted an infection 01/2015 that is more common in immunosuppressed patients, so I am keeping myself in check and trying to definitively rule out HIV as the cause of this infection.

I am sexually active, with about 3 encounters in the past year with unprotected sex (receptive end, no ejaculation) -- the latest one being 2 months ago.

Unprotected intercourse is a risk for infection and you will need to test.  Guidelines are to test at 6 weeks past the last incident and then at 13 weeks to confirm the results.  The blood test your doctor ordered will give you accurate results and we do not comment on test results, as there are many variables that can affect the reliability of an HIV test.  You can read about testing here:  Testing Information

I would suggest you discuss any test results that concern you, with your doctor as we only provide risk assessments here.

I understand, and I know my risks.
I was wondering, based on the length of time people have been on these forums, if the "slightly" positive test result was encountered before, and what became of it. And should I give more or less emphasis on either of these tests. What is the consensus with rapid tests in general? What about the accuracy of Clearview and OraQuix?
Please understand that I am freaking out here. I am very young and currently studying in the health professional school I've always dreamed of doing. I would be so devastated if it turned out to be positive, and I cannot continue with school anymore because of it.

Rapid tests are accurate when done correctly.  You seem to be unsure as to what the results were and I have no way of knowing the results and that's why I suggested you talk with your doctor concerning this issue.  Our role is not to interpret test results, it is to provide risk assessments.  If you have questions regarding your results, you need to speak with someone locally.  We cannot help you with test results, over the Internet.

That negative rest result is encouraging, but you won't have an all-clear until you get a negative at 3 months.

You need to learn from this experience that you can have all the anal sex you want to, but you need to do it the safer way. That means the insertive partner needs to be wearing a condom. No exceptions.

And even if you do test positive, which hopefully you won't, but if you do, there is no reason you can't still have a career as a health professional. I know many such professionals including doctors who are HIV positive.

And follow Joe's excellent advice and discuss the test results with your doctor if you have any questions.

But cross that bridge when you get to it about testing positive, if that happens.

Good luck with your three month test.
