Good Links on POZ on POZ Bareback?
« on: August 25, 2010, 11:46:46 pm »
Are there any good links with data on POZ on POZ Bareback, regardless of Undetectable VL or not?  I know there are lots of information on "SuperBug" or "SuperInfection" but wanted to read something that's somewhat trust worthy?  Informative Websites not hook up sites :)

What are you asking for?  A sex site for poz on poz bareback sex?  Studies on that mystery known as superinfection?

I've always wondered if you could be infected once, why couldn't you be infected more than once.  Most believe it only happens soon after initial infection.  I've read everything from HIV being a hard virus to transmit anyway, so the chances of it happening twice are low to maybe people who progress very quickly are probably infected with more than one strain.  I will often read where it is hard to prove, because it would take expensive tests to confirm.

I have no idea what is truth or fiction.  I know there are really smart people here who can give you all the research.

Hi there. Long time no see. Hope all has been going well.

Good luck on finding anything reliable and substantial about superinfection.  I'm not going to call it a myth, but I have my reservations on that topic.

Hi,

This page has a whole list of articles:

http://www.thebody.com/index/treat/superinfection.html

A few months ago there was a scare that I had gotten reinfected; it's still possible that I was but seems less likely now.  Anyway those articles (all of them!) are what I read at the time to try to make sense of what I thought had happened.

The bottom line seems to be that there is a very small handful of documented cases of reinfection, and even in those cases the reinfection did not make a big difference in the long run.  In one case it actually helped the guy out, because he had had a strain with some resistances before, and the new strain did not have any resistances.

I should point out that reinfection is not the only thing that could result from poz on poz bareback sex.  There are other creatures out there too, unfortunately.

Yeah, I agree. A simple AEGIS search would point you to first-tiered, peer reviewed articles about "superinfection." Frankly, I think that it might have happened to a dozen or so people in the history of the pandemic, if that. Like Newt (one of my scientific heroes) states, the odd one-off situation does nothing to change the scientific perspective or consensus.

Most of the Poz couples I know do not use condoms. And when Ihave been in a relationship with a POZ person, I surely didn't.
"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

About your post, I wish I had the minds of many members here.  So many of them seem to be able to read studies, digest it, and comprehend what it says.  When I read a study full of numbers, my mind starts to wonder.

If you get infected with another strain you become resistant to all drug combos not to mention all the other STD's. Did we not learn the first time where unprotected sex got us. If you want to die fast just keep not using a condom.

Bullshit.  Didn't you read the above?  The long history says this doesn't happen.

I've heard guys say they use bareback.com and like it.  Just be careful of the other viral and bacterial cooties out there.  No need to add another STD to the stew, eh?  We're seeing more syphilis in HIV positive men where I live.  Probably a good thing to make sure you don't have an other STD and if you do, get it treated.  Also, probably a good thing to make sure that those who you bareback with don't have an STD--help them get tested and treated if needed.

Just my 2 cents.

You will not find much of anything that speaks positively about unprotected sex between HIV infected partners because "responsible types" don't want to be seen encouraging the practice. And please don't get me started on the whole re/superinfection thing.

I have lived with the virus for 27 years (my AIDS is older than several members here  :D), and have not used a condom since 2006, over the course of hundreds of encounters. The only detriment to my well-being has been a few UTIs; maybe I'm just lucky: I'm certainly not made of steel.

We live with enough grief from the stigmas and other negative judgements from others; the last place it should be perpetuated is amongst our own kind.
Blessed with brains, talent and gorgeous tits.

I can count 6 confirmed cases of superinfection (reinfection) and maybe 3 dozen possible (undecidable) cases, plus 5 confirmed cases of household transmission (ie from daily living) in the literature.

What you gonna worry about?

Obviously, shagging around has additional risks, but there you go.

The key thing here is the likelihood of transmission and difference between two people's types of HIV. Both people on treatment, transmission of a 2nd set of HIV seems so very, very unlikely (I hate to say 0 chance, but it's close). People off treatment, transmission in any case is unlikely without additional factors (like an STI). If you have the same HIV as the other person then it ain't gonna matter. You can't drink a glass of water twice eh?

Medscape did a good review a few year's back, perhaps definitive, see here: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/504811_2

Choose wisely and enjoy  :-)

Indeed, well said, choose wisely. But do what you judge is right. People make different decisions in this situation, some sane, some self-justifying. It's a world of difference shagging around to being intimate with your one true love (current or future).

Wouldn't being on meds also be like PEP and PREP together in terms of re-infection?  I also don't use condoms with other HIV+ guys, but I request a full STD screening every other blood-draw or so.
