First speaking engagement
« on: August 24, 2006, 12:21:20 am »
Hello all,

My wife and I live in Sacramento, but are from Indiana and will visit there in a few weeks.  My sister works in a mental health facility where a few of her co-workers are concerned about rumors that a couple of clients may be hiv+.  One of them believes that you can catch it by drinking after an infected person.  So my sister asked her boss if I could address the staff in a special training session.  I'm going to take her up on it.  I've never been so open about my status before, but they really need to be educated.

The evil joe wants to say "Well, umm, I was on an elevator one day, and umm there was this guy who looked, you know, questionable, and he farted, and two weeks later my knees started itching, and OMG now I have it"--you know just for being so stupid.  But I'll keep the evil joe subdued.

Wish me luck.

If there's a cure I hope I can have all the leftover Sustiva.

Hello Joe, it is Eldon. Wanted to wish you the best of luck when you make your presentation in Indiana. Educate them.

You may want to read trough: http://www.aidsmeds.com/lessons/Transmission1.htm, to help you with your presentation.

Have the best day.

That's a fine service to offer, Joe. We need more people who will educate others and help to lift the weight of ignorance, stigma and fear from HIV. As well as helping others to protect themselves from the real risks.

Please keep us posted on how it goes.

Cheers,
Andy Velez

hi,
I also live in indiana, and have been public about my hiv status here and back in my homeland of Jamaica.
There is really no easy way to do this, but trust me peoples perspective will change once they hear your story.
In many cases i have found that being hivt and trying to educate others will most often produce a positive result, you see alot of people think that this disease has nothing to do with them, and they do not realise that they themsleves could be infected and they just don't know it.
In many cases I have found that hearing the facts from someone who is actually living with the disease makes  it more HUMAN.
So do your thing and be proud, it might not be positive reactions all around but you will amke a difference.
LOL
