Support Groups
« on: July 01, 2010, 10:21:52 pm »
Hello All,

Does anyone know how I would go about finding a support group for myself, as a mother of someone who is HIV+?  I thoroughly appreciate the insight I have found on this website, but I would like to find a face-to-face group where I can be with those who share my feelings.  I live in Clarksville, TN.  I'm sure there is nothing in this town, but maybe in Nashville, which is about 45 minutes away.

I feel like I am handling the news as well as can be expected.  Actually I do my best not to dwell on it or think about it too much, as I am the anxious type and I can easily worry myself sick.  Sometimes the "what ifs" take over.

So many of you are very positive and upbeat and I really admire that.  My son is also very positive.  Thank God he didn't take after me with the anxiety issues. LOL

Thanks again for being there for me.

So many of you are very positive

Heh understatement of the year

I feel like there must be some sort of support group for family members of hiv+ people but I don't think I've heard of any.  I have a good friend who's positive in the nashville area I can ask to see if he knows of anything.  In addition there are 2 forum members that I know of in Nashville and perhaps they can chime in on the subject.

I would check with Nashville ASOs (AIDS Service Organizations)...You can probably search on here for some or google search.  Another suggestion, that might seem kind of far out there is that if you do reach an organization and they don't have any such group, maybe you could volunteer and start one.... it might get off to a slow start, but I would bet that, just like you, there are other mothers, fathers, loved ones out there who would soon join you.....

I remember starting a support group like this many years ago up North when I was in college as part of my mini-internship - way before I was positive - I remember that only one person showed up the first week - but she was so grateful that there was a group were she could at least go and after my internship was over she took it over --- from my understanding it is still going strong today (with more then one person attending).

Keep us informed  on what you fiind out....
