Student HIV/AIDS Bill Passes in the South Carolina House
« on: June 01, 2008, 01:35:05 pm »
The South Carolina House of Representatives passed a bill on Wednesday May 28, 2008 that in affect would violate HIPPA.

Though the bill eliminates the current rule that the Department of Health and Environmental Control from notifying schools of the names of HIV/AIDS positive youth, it will allow for nurses to call the DHEC anytime a K - 12 student is in a fight or clashes on the sports field to find out if any of the students have any blood borne pathogen including HIV.

So, I ask is this a veiled witch hunt to target HIV/AIDS positive youth, or is this a sincere attempt at protecting all students?

As there's never been a documented case of transmission resulting from a fight or contact sports, it is indeed a witch hunt. Bastards.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

It's a total witch hunt aimed at the smallest pozzies.  This is also a really scary prospect for us.  Wow..that's all I can say.

And to think that I probably share some common ancestors with a few of these ignorant xenophobes.  They've certainly helped fulfill the sterotyping of Southerners as buffoons unable to take science-based decisions.

Hmmm.... in theory I don't have to report to work for the next two weeks.....

Definitely a witch hunt.  It is very sad the ignorance that exists and even more disturbing when you have elected officials who are so ignorant that have the power to make such laws.  HIV won't be spread in that manner and there is such a thing as universal precautions.  It also scares me to think of what could happen when a hysterical, uneducated parent has found out that there child was fighting with an HIV + student.

This what scares me so much. Being "Branded" with the general public having their own incorrect ideas about HIV. I sometimes live in fear that work and etc will have the right to know. Filling out a job app. and having a box that says HIV+ or HIV-! and having to check one. Pushed by insurance companies or who knows

Anyway it been a long time so hello to all
I keep waiting to wake up from this dream. Why me? The past is history, Tomorrow is unknown and today is the present "a gift"
