Condom Slipped off while having sex with a sex worker
« on: August 03, 2007, 09:38:37 am »
Hello,

Yestarday I was having sex with a sexual worker suddenly we both notice the condom was slipped off. I think the time unprotected was around 3 minutes. What is the risk that I have?...She promised me that she is very carefull and it was the first time that happen to her and all the intercourses she has are protected. Anyway I am still very worried. She offered me to go together to a test so I can notice she is completaly healthy, however if I go with her that test would not take into consideration the last three months before the day she made the test. Should I go to test with her?
I know I have to wait at least 3 months before testing. would you recommend to test each month?

Juan,

The chances of you having contracted HIV from this encounter are very low indeed. You were protected up until the condom came off and, in any case, HIV is a difficult virus to transmit. Particularly from female to male.

Nevertheless we cannot be sure and HIV is nothing to guess about. You do need to have an HIV antibody test 13 weeks from the date of this sexual encounter. You should be aware that there are other STD's that are more prevalent and transmissible than HIV. You should ask your doctor or local clinic to arrange a full STD screen at the appropriate time.

Also you should take the time to read our Welcome Thread which contains links to our testing and transmission lessons.

Once again, I fully expect you to test negative for HIV.

Hello Matty,

So by your answer I should undestand that I can be calm????. I will do the test to totally put behind this event and be more carefully.

Thank you very much

Yes Juan, there really is no need to get freaked out here.

The chances of you having been infected with HIV are very very very low. You should still have a test at 13 weeks but I'm extremely confident you'll test negative.

Everything Matty has told you is spot on.

Was there some risk because the condom slipped off? Yes. But given that this was a single and brief incident and that it is significantly more difficult to transmit HIV from female to male, (IF in fact the woman was HIV+, which you don't know for sure), all of that points very encouragingly towards your testing negative.

For future reference make sure you are using condoms which fit you properly.

And during your waiting time stay productively busy. You'll be amazed at how quickly the time can pass if you get busy with other things.

Cheers,
Andy Velez

Hello,

Four weeks have gone since this possible exposure. It is really stressfull to live like this when this incident it is all the time in my mind. I always said to my self that i should not care about any symtopm since there are not reliable, but it seem that all the symptoms are there, even I feel scare about a simple sniff. This coming week I will go to test myself for first time, I hope this can help me to release a little bit of stress. I should be nice to read some words of courage from you guys

Thank you.

Juancarlos, the odds are very much in your favor that you are going to test negative, no matter what symptoms you are experiencing.

So go ahead and test at 4 weeks. Collect the negative I expect you to get. You will need to re-test at 13 weeks just to be certain.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Cheers,
Andy Velez

juan,

I don't expect your result to change. However, there really is no reason for so many tests. It's a waste of resources. You only need to confirm your negative result at the three month point.

Hello,

Today I went to pick up my test result of my 8 weeks after my incident. I am sorry to dont follow the recommendation of Ann, but you know guys how stressful can be to wait until the week 13. Well my result at 8 weeks came back negative. One thing to bring up my attention on the test is that lab use an "agglutination particles" method, It is strange for me because I have never heard about this method before. Is that method as reliable as a ELISA? I think I just need one test more at 13 week right? but this 8 weeks result is already very good right?

Thank you so much

juan,

The test used has been FDA approved for quite some time and yes, an eight week negative is good. Please confirm at three months. I don't expect the result to change.

Hi,

After my 8 negative weeks, what are the chances that this negative will remain at 13 week??

You will almost certainly test negative at week 13.

Hello,

Sorry guys to bother you again, I thought that after my 8 weeks negative result I could be more relaxed however I am still feeling very nervous and with a lot of axiety. Still three week I need to wait for my 90 days so that I can get my conclusive result. It should be nice to get some courage words again,

Thank you.

Feelings are not facts. A negative at 8 weeks all but guarantees you will be collecting another negative result shortly.

Get productively busy in your life and these last waiting days will pass much more quickly.

I expect you will be telling us good news shortly.

Cheers,

Hi,

Sorry I bring this topic back again. Recently I have been experienced some symptoms like night sweating, weakness. So it came to my mind what happened in 2007 to me.
Last time I tested I waited 3 months and it came back negative, since that time the only risk situation I´ve been is a oral sex (Me receiving) I´ve been reading some webpages saying the 6 months is the only 100% sure result. I went to the doctor last week and be tested. Tomorrow I will receive my result. I try to say to myself that the 3 months result was totally reliable. I think I must expect a negative again, right?

Thank you!

   Anyone who continues to post excessively, questioning a conclusive negative result or no-risk situation, will be subject to a four week Time Out (a temporary ban from the Forums). If you continue to post excessively after one Time Out, you may be given a second Time Out which will last eight weeks. There is no third Time Out - it is a permanent ban. The purpose of a Time Out is to encourage you to seek the face-to-face help we cannot provide on this forum.

Yes, you will get another negative result. You are worrying needlessly.

Surfing the web is a bad idea because you will only find things there that will feed your worst fears and all to no good purpose. You are HIV negative.

Frankly, if you continue to return here with more worries when we know you are HIV negative, you find yourself getting a 28 day time out from the site. Consider yourself warned.
