New Regimen?
« on: December 19, 2016, 08:50:57 pm »
After about 10 years of being on a regiment of TRUVADA ,NORVIR AND LEXIVA,my NEW DOCTOR wants to change to GENVOYA AND PREZCOBIX.HE SAID that first and foremost that there appears to be some kidney damage due to TRUVADA.HE also stated that TRUVADA will be eventually be phased out and no longer be recommended as a form of treatment.OF course i was taken by surprise but i do understand that being on the same regiment for so long, maybe it was time to change as long it was for the right reasons .I have never heard  of GENVOYA AND PREZCOBIX,WHAT CAN I EXPECT??AM I gonna have to deal with the horrible side effects all over again.ANYBODY HAVE ANY INSIGHTS?

Hi

Well I can understand the doctor wanting to switch you to a newer regime with less side effects.  Another member switched last week to Genvoya as well http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=64939.0

Ill be honest other than a few days perhaps of you body adjusting you should not be expecting any problems at all when you do switch to Genvoya.

About the kidney comment well Genvoya contains: elvitegravir + tenofovir alafenamide + emtricitabine + cobicistat

tenofovir alafenamide, or TAF. (Descovy) is the successor of  Truvada tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF)

Descovy - TAF is easier on the kidneys and bones than its predecessor, and more efficiently targets cells,  a dose one tenth that of TDF is required, and 90 percent less drug winds up in the bloodstream, where it may cause harm.

So sounds like switching the Truvada out for something that has it successor, that is a lower dose with improved targeting and fewer side effects is a good thing.

Both Genvoya and Prezcobix both contain cobicistat.  I would question both my doctor and pharmacist about the combination containing 2x the dose of cobicistat.

I would think that Descovy+Prezcobix
or Genvoya+Prezesta
would be more appropriate.

I am not a Doctor but would want to know their reasons for the recommended meds.
