This old cheap low tech tempermental computer is going to the store to do menial tasks! :)
I bought a new one today and can't wait to use it.
More memory, faster, light up keyboard (... :) :) :)...), touch screen, and Windows 8 :-\. Guess I will be forced to learn new things.
I will have to wait for Kenny to set it up. :-[ (security, etc.)
Hopefully I will be able to make the transition without too much pain.

I'm sure you'll done fine. When I got my laptop, I was so hesitant to use it since I was so used to using the desktop. Now, it's all I use and I've taken down the desktop (memory was full and don't want to put more on right now).

Lucky you. Jealous. Mine froze three times today after years of steadiness. This isn't the first time a Mac starts to spit and spittle on me suspiciously within a few weeks of my warranty expiration...

And it's not just Macs either. I swear companies put some sort of "smart chip" in their products these days that emit "self-destruct rays" the minute the warranty expires.

I'm sure I will get used to it. Looking forward to seeing the keys better, a mouse that actually works on a regular basis, and a computer that doesn't freeze up.

They tried to sell me the extended warranty (2 years) but it seems I usually get a problem at around the 3-4 year mark. Yup, timed destructo chip built in on all of them. :P
This one wasn't all that pricey but I still hate forking out the $. It was getting to the point that I was paying nearly as much to tech guys as the old computer was worth.
Keeping my fingers crossed for the new one.

The only thing I will say about Macs and freezing issues are that they can often be diagnosed if you buy something like DiskWarrior. It's expensive (~$99), but it's the software that Apple technicians use.
First of all, after three years you've added a lot of files to a hard drive, deleted them, moved them around, done various application installations and then perhaps deleted them, various OS upgrades, etc. Second, it should go without saying that you always are going to need more RAM than what comes standard when you buy from Apple.
DiskWarrior will do a standard rebuilding of your director which is more involved than the "repair permissions" and/or "repair disk" that comes included with Apple's own Disk Utility software. If that doesn't work then DiskWarrior has more extensive options that delve down into individual files resource headers, data.plist files etc. All of those "hidden gems" that are down several levels in the OS Library file that over time can be causing freezing issues.

I'm loving it too and will be learning for awhile but so far hasn't presented a major problem in using for the basics.
I AM however having a problem with connectivity. Not sure if it's the computer, our router, or what.
Wasn't much of a problem before. Just on a rare occasion. I have lost the connection to the internet 5 times in 3 days.
Any ideas?
ps- only had to unplug the router once to solve the problem. the other times it just connected on it's own. I do the router problem searchy thing and it seems to correct the problem... for the moment.
pss- wondering if our 5-6 year old router is not as compatible with this setup.
I am pretty clueless as you can see.

After much frustration and research to solve the connectivity problem and the spotty ability to watch any video the solution was to get a new router with greater band width (whatever that means). Our old one was listed as "compatible" for windows 8 but it obviously wasn't.
Anyway, here is a lovely pic of Kenny sitting on the basement floor near the router talking to some HP tech guy for well over an hour. He loves me, he really does. ;D

They are leaking now! :( Just a temporary problem due to the gutters being off that side of the roof while Kenny is working on it. He better get moving. Yes, I can be a bitchy prissy too. :)

Leaking is the least of your problems. Limestone leaches radon and basements are natural radon caches because the walls contact earth. So double your radon, double your mutations. :P
Granite countertops can have radiation hotspots in them too.
And, just for the fun of it, bananas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana_equivalent_dose) are naturally radioactive also.

Well, I'm not sure if it matters but the stones aren't limestone. I just checked the radon map of Connecticut and we are in a low-moderate radon area. Probably should get it tested OR Kenny and I could both be on the lookout for a third nipple forming and creepy slimy creatures climbing out of our belly buttons.

Is the Laptop working again ?
Six weeks ago I got as a birthday present an HP Envy Touch Smart 4-1202ED. I had been working already with Windows 8 on my previous laptop....but now with the touchscreen it was just like an iPad.
However the joy was for a very very short time....twice it froze on me, but I managed to restart it. But not the last time two weeks ago. After my partner spent over an hour on the phone with an HP tech, it was decided to send it in for repair.
Yesterday morning I could see online that the status was "in repair" , this morning the status was changed to "repair postponed"
What the f*ck ? It's saturday and no use in calling...have to wait till monday.
And my partner keeps rubbing it in " told you so to get an Apple" (I just can't seem to get along on an Apple....even now on this MacBook Air)

Yup, my laptop is up and running. I also have a HP Envy Touchsmart but a different model.

Well Apple and PC are just two options pleasing two different populations, me thinks. My bricked apple wont even be inspected by the Apple Store until next week. I cried a river up the chain of command until finally someone on campus dislodged an apple loaner to me.
30 years on Apple, and now Im an neanderthal on a PC. I tried working on the PC loaner and it was so frustrating and disheartening....
I never much got into the snob appeal of apple and always resented the price. I just early on adapted to the ergometrics and work flow style. Thats the ones we had on campus everywhere so they got me there, many years ago.
For over a decade they's been obsolete two years after buying them, but I've noticed that this 2 year old mac, (the bricked one) could easily be fast and handle the current state of affairs for another year or two, if it weren't bricked!
And then, yup, i have had two now, that seemed mysteriously to die at warranty time. I personally don't trust Apple and how its brainwashed my buying habits with its ease of use and low maintenance. I resisted iPhones for years, before I caved and bought one.
I'd like to switch to PC permanently, but I never seem to find the opportunity, between work (pressing tasks to be done in time limits) and down time (who wants to learn new skills in down time?) that I would be willing to dedicate to coming up to speed, living in a PC environment....
We can get such MAJOR discounts on supersonic PCS through the national tech universities, and long warranties... The similar apple offer is OK, but pales in comparsion for the discount. Apple wants everyone of your dimes you can spare.
