low WBC
« on: January 15, 2016, 02:41:02 pm »
Hello all,

So, I go to the lab bi-weekly for the Complete Blood Cell and Comprehensive Metabolic Panel tests per my HIV doc recommendation.  I do the CD4 and VL tests monthly.

Anyways, I just got my CBC and Metabolic results online today and one thing that i have noticed is that my total WBC has been decreasing each time.  Today it is marked LOW with 2.8 out of a normal range of 4.0-11.0  In parenthesis it is written "verified by repeat analysis".

I tend to obsess and overanalyze all these tests but I can't help wonder why my WBC keeps getting lower and I feel healthy and fine .  I associate a low WBC with being sick and feeling sick.  Everything else on the panel is in range...well, neutrophils and lymphocytes are a bit off.

Is it possible that my taking many antibiotics --Bactrim possibly being the culprit---is making my wbc.  When I see my HIV doc he never brings up these CBC or metabolic results so I am assuming it is nothing to worry about but I see him next week to get my VL and CD4 counts so maybe I will ask to put my mind at ease.

In the meanwhile, anyone out there have similar results of low wbc but feeling ok or prolonged use antibiotics causing such a result?

Happy Friday
John

John,

A single WBC that is out of range is not anything to really be concerned about.  Lots of things can cause this -- including a viral infection.  The fact that your doctor is not mentioning it may also indicate that the overall picture painted by your lab results seem to be "OK", however, if you have a concern, you should ask him about it.

It is good to trust your doctor, but he can't read your mind, so talk to him, ask him questions.

Let us know what he says!

Mike

Hi JonJon,
I am not a doctor nor do i have any medial knowledge. I have, however, experienced the same result in most of my labs since the beginning. My Neurophils and lymphosytes were off and after going online and doing the Google searches i was convinced that i was dying of lymphoma! Actually, Bocker3 put some perspective on things for me and, after switching doctors, my new doc told me it is quite normal to have these type of results among HIV poz people. A test done recently showed PERFECT numbers. So...i guess what i am trying to say is, do not stress out. If there is cause for concern i am sure your doctor will point it out to you. Take care and good luck!
