Sanitex,

Thalassemia is a genetic disease, so that has nothing to do with hiv. link

It's unclear from your post if you wife has a cyst in her womb or if it's an ovarian cyst - I've never heard of cysts in the womb (although I've heard of polyps in the womb), but sometimes cysts form on or in the cervix and can create problems when a woman tries to conceive. Growths in the womb are more usually called fibroids and are generally not cancerous. Fibroids are common and are not caused by hiv.

Ovarian cysts are also common and are not caused by hiv infection. (I've had four, only one of them happened after I was poz)

Cervical cancer is more common in hiv positive women, but it doesn't sound as though this is the problem.

It's also unclear whether or not she's actually been diagnosed with some sort of cancer. Quite often cysts are not cancer.

Sanitex,

If your wife has an ovarian cyst, she should take the doctor's advice and have the operation. Ovarian cysts, aside from causing pain, can also be dangerous. The tend to grow on stalks and the stalk can twist, which cuts off the blood supply to the cyst. The cells in the cyst then die due to a lack of oxygen and nutrients and this can cause infection and gangrene. Twisted ovarian cysts can happen at any time and are usually VERY painful. She really needs to avoid having this happen.

The operation for ovarian cyst is usually done by laparoscopic surgery. It is often done on an out-patient basis, although with your wife having hiv, they might want to keep her in overnight to keep an eye on things and make sure she doesn't end up with an infection. I've had several laparoscopic proceedures and they are quite easy to go through and the healing time is minimal compared to regular open surgery. The possibility of post-op infection is also reduced.

Your wife's numbers should have no bearing on having surgery. They're fine.

Again, I think your wife should take the doctor's advice and have the surgery. You can always get a second opinion from another doctor, but another doctor is likely to give you the same advice to have the surgery. Good luck, keep us posted.

Ann

PS - please make sure you read through the ovarian cyst links I gave you in my earlier post so you both can have a better understanding of what you're dealing with.
