Hello,

First and foremost I know that this question has been asked a lot and I have been browsing many forums and websites to get clear answers to my questions.

Exactly a month ago, I performed an unprotected fellatio on a guy I met through internet. Before doing so, I made sure he showed me his test result : the test he took on the January 4th said he was HIV negative.

I did not receive any sperm in my mouth, just on my hand and as for precum, it is possible that I received some in my mouth as it is hard to assess how much you received when you're in the heat of the moment. I didn't have any open sores or cut in my mouth.

However, I am now getting every worrying symptom in the book. The symptoms started exactly a week ago, they include :

- A sore throat, swollen lymph nodes and red spots on my tongue
- Diarrhea
- Loss of apetite
- A Urinary Tract Infection
- Fever and chills
- What is classified as Terry's nails (red lines at the top of my nails)

Please note that I visited a doctor for my UTI and sore throat and I got urinary tests done yesterday. Also, this Monday : I got tested for every possible STD that is testable after the three weeks window (including HIV which I know isn't conclusive but the 80% reliability would bring me a first reinsurance).

My questions are now :
1) Can I get infected in this way ? I know chances are pretty low but I wouldn't be here if I had a presentiment that something is definitely wrong. It was my first time having sex ever and I never had this many health issues at the same time.

2) Could it be another STD ? I am asking this question because even having looked for what STD my symptoms could be associated with; there were so many that everything pointed to HIV.

Thank you in advance for your answers

Hi ,

So Oral sex is not a risk, all studies have shown that the risk for sexually transmitted HIV comes from unprotected anal and vaginal intercourse .The virus is very fragile, and your mouth has dozens of protein and enzymes that damage the virus and render it unable to infect . If this is your only concern you have not put yourself at risk for HIV transmission.

As for what is making you sick and your symptoms we don't discuss them so please speak to a doctor about what is making you sick.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:
You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for all (STI's) sexually transmitted infections together.

If you are sexually active, it is highly recommended that you get a full sexual health check-up / screening at least annually including but not limited to hiv testing.

Remember that some sexual practices which may be described as ‘safe’ in terms of HIV transmission might still pose a risk for transmission of other STI's. So please do get fully tested regularly for all STI's including HIV and more frequently if unprotected intercourse occurs. Also note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms and the only way of knowing is by testing.

Finally use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid sexually transmitted hiv infection.

Kind regards

Jim

All the studies have shown that the risk factors for sexually transmitted HIV comes from unprotected anal and vaginal sex. There is no need to run out and test for HIV every time you have oral sex. Just get tested the next time you are due and expect a negative result if this is you're only concern. We do not discuss symptoms and advise you to see a doctor if you are sick.

This is important … the only HIV test that matters is your own test taken at the appropriate time. Never ask a person to test for you or to see their test … Due to window periods and other factors its a sure way to end up living with HIV if you use another persons test results to negotiate safer sex. It’s not a factor in this assessment as you did not have a risk anyway.

Thank you all for your very well informed responses. I have taken notes from your advice as I need to educate myself more on STD risk. As you can see, I am quite worried and I will get at the bottom of the reason behind my symptoms whether it's another STD or simply a cold/anxiety/any other non infectious disease.

Thanks again for your time.

Follow up on my tests, everything that is testable came back negative (chlamydia, Hepatitis B and HIV), so that is reassuring. This was a test only 3 weeks after my exposure, so I'm still anxious about the 6 weeks one but slightly relieved. However, when I asked the doctor that gave me my results he said HIV transmission is not impossible through oral sex. He had a patient get infected this way last year. I don't know if you guys would care to comment on that or are you absolutely adamant about what you said before.

Thank you again for the help.

You did not have an exposure so if this is you’re only concern the test is conclusive and you can move on. You do not need HIV testing for giving a blow job, just get tested the next time you are due as a regular part of your checkup like all sexually active people should be doing anyway.
