I use PSYLLIUM HUSKS 500 mg. Capsules and it helps.  It doesn't stop  it completely but occurs less frequent.  I use to buy it at Targtet but I get it cheaper from

I've read many articles on Aloe Vera and they sometimes state that taken internally can CAUSE diarrhea. Also it works as an immune stimulant which isn't good for us hiv'rs. Be careful!

Hi all,

re: Aloe, I think that the Aloe that can cause diarrhea is the juice ( Aloe Vera) or perhaps pills; In the case of homeopatic aloe complex, we're talking about very small amounts of Aloe socotrina, a different specie - those who question homeopathy would say "zero" amounts! - and the complex includes the following too: Citrullus Colocynthis, Podophyllum peltatum, Brionya, Belladonna, Arsenil anhydridum, Dioacorea villosa and Magnesil phosphae.

I will ask my doctor further questions about this and get back to you,

Pat

White rice and applesauce with lots of nutmeg.  Do it for a couple days, then slowly add other things back into your diet.  Nutmeg is a natural form of immodium.  Basically a BRAT diet.  Banana's, rice, applesauce and dry toast.

cabin crew has the best advice...white rice and applesauce is easily available and does not need any special dose or monitoring...you get it a the grocery store...and voila....a treatment
I would definately try that first.  If it does not help...then on to bigger and better things.

Pancrecarb has done wonders for me, and I had had bad diarrhea ever since going on PI's 8 years ago.  For the first 6 years all I was offered was prescription immodium until it had gotten up to 10 2mg pills/day.  My current doctor also thinks that this uncontrollable diarrhea interfered with my body properly absorbing my HIV medications and resulted in resistance to PI's.  Pancrecarb has now decreased my problem by about 80%.  It's also covered by ADAP in my state.

I had it for months matey. the only thing that eventually worked at all for me was Metamucil (which is full of psyllium and soluble fibre) and the brat diet.

Aloe Vera juice can (and likely will) cause diarrhoea if it is made from crushing the whole plant _ this form of aloe vera also tastes very bitter. aloe Vera juice squeezed only from the inner plant will not cause diarrhoea and is used to sooth the bowel. It also tastes much nicer than the other stuff.

Oh, and for some reason I find that if I eat lots and lots I tend not to have diarrhoea.

Good luck

thank you optionsf ... about every 6 weeks I'll get the dreaded *D* word for a morning. knock on wood it's not more than that - however i just want it OUT of my life ... if Florastor works then i 'll happily overlook its price and keep it as a ready defense

love this site!!!!!

alex, if the florastor is the same as i get over here( looks like it is, good old Saccharomyces Boulardii), then it is good stuff indeed. I don't find it helps very much with ARV related diarrhea, but i always take it during and after antibiotic treatment. Since i started doing this, i am far less likely to get bouts of oral and GI thrush...antibiotics are brill, but they don't half devastate the natural bacteria population.

i also always give some to anyone who's going travelling...you can take it either prophylactically, before and during your trip, or use to treat any food poisoning etc.

CWD - your doc can prescribe stonger opiate based meds to help with diarrhea control if none of suggestions are helping...

Kate
