Title: 30 years ago, Elvis died. What are your memories of that day?
Post by: milker on August 15, 2007, 12:26:31 am
I was an exchange student in britain, and my "foster" family cried for 2 days. I was humping the carpet.

My best friend's mom locked herself in her room, boozed it up, cried, and listened to "Love Me Tender" over and over again.

I, OTOH, sat in the back of the Algebra class with the "bad crowd," smoked dope, and discussed Robert Plant's dick.

Edited to add:  This was in Louisville, Kentucky, btw....

I think I was playing with Star Wars figures at the time, so I don't know that I paid it that much mind.  I do remember my sister had just visited Graceland about and week or two prior to this.  I also remember it hit the grown ups pretty hard- especially the ultra-conservative christians that were right up the street.  The same ones that told me at 5 years old that Santa wasn't real and was a tool of the devil to blind children to the real meaning of Christmas.  They wouldn't let their children watch live television (only cartoons) or listen to any music other than gospel- the exception being Elvis Presley.

We should ask Doxie.  It's her hometown.

30 years ago, eh? Matty the Damned will be fucked if he can remember what he was doing. Something in corduroy most likely.

Nevertheless, in honour of this auspicious month let us remember that Great Lump of Blubber with a song. (http://media.putfile.com/Dead-Elvis---DAAS)

We covered all of our mirrors and sat on small stools for seven days.

I seem to remember lots of people with very badly dyed black hair weepin' and a wailin'.

To be honest, I didn't really know who Elvis was.  He was just a bit too much cabaret. Now if you were talking about Karen Carpenter.

I will never forget that day.

I had just recieved a letter on Friday the 12th telling me I had passed my final nursing exam, on Monday the 15th my friend and I went to have our photo's taken in uniform..and the following day (16th) we planned on hitting the shops to buy an outfit for a party that my parents were having for me the following Saturday.

As we shopped around we heard the news from a women in one of the shops...I was just devasted, I was a great fan of Elvis, and still am..it put a real damper on the day I can tell you..my friend and I sat in a cafe and shed quite a few tears, and as we looked around we realized we weren't the only ones...it was a sad day that's for sure.

Hugs

I was 11, and didn't really know much about him.  We were at Ocean Isle, NC on a family vacation.  I remember playing on the beach and in the water, as usual.  We (my dad and I) made a beach bonfire that night. Quite a few people we didn't know asked if they could sit around it too, but it was so quiet.  I guess they were mourning in their own ways.  My parents, particularly my dad, was really down the rest of the trip.

10 years ago this week, there was a series of Elvis specials on TV... an Elvis Week.  Documentaries, movies, and video clips of him performing were aired.  I actually gained an appreciation for his earlier work.

My mom and I were returning from visiting my grandfather who was deathly ill in the hospital.  We had to pull over as she was overcome with emotion, most likely from her visiting her father for one of the last times.  Elvis was just the key to unlock the tears.

On a side note several years ago my ex, who was an outstanding organist and pianist, had a performance in Memphis.  Following the performance we had dinner with several people one of which was the doctor who was working the emergency room when Elvis was brought to the hospital.  It was interesting to hear him tell of the goings on upon the King's arrival.  He was certain it was Elvis, but then one never knows.......

My older son Ben, who was just 6, was sitting in my lap at the barber shop getting a haircut That was the only way he'd go for a haircut. (And yes, he has since outgrown that habit). Ben already had his own recordplayer then and had become a big Elvis fan. I had found a bunch of Elvis 45s and LPs for him and various Elvis gear, so he was totally Elvised up.

During his haircut the announcement came over the shop's radio that Elvis had died. Ben asked me what that meant. So I had to explain the best I could in simple terms what dying and dead meant. He absorbed that without comment.

From then on Ben had absolutely no interest in Elvis or his music. I guess as far as he was concerned at the time, if you were dead he didn't want any part of it.

I use to like the man's music, I will not lie but wondered about him ever since Public Enemy came out with "Fight the Power" back in the day. I have heard that he really didn't care for blacks much at all.

Relax people the man is not dead. We all know the Memphis Mafia(the name of his posse)faked his death to avoid paying back taxes and alimony. He knew he would be worth much more dead than alive. Elvis lives a quiet, peaceful life in a gated community, appropriately named Graceland Square. Hell, we bump into him all the time.

I remember it like it was yesterday, ya know. I was in a neighbor's garage making a model airplane out of balsa wood and paper. It came over the radio that Elvis had died and they played one of his songs. My friend's mom came out crying and I remember thinking "this is a big deal" even though I wasn't a fan.

At least his family had the good taste not to commercialize his death.

I remember people making a big deal about.  I was just happy it wasn't one of the members of the Village People
