Sample airfares to SFO/OAK
« on: January 19, 2007, 08:12:41 pm »
Hello Everyone:   ;D

Now that we have begun to narrow the discussion on dates and location I thought it might be a good time to check into what some of the current airfares are.

I know that Dennis has also reached out to both American and JetBlue regarding the possibility of getting a group discount, which if that could happen would be fantastic.

I only used one search engine for these fares below and that was priceline.com.  It's entirely possible that some of you could find better fares on some of the other sites.

I also only did this search based upon the two major San Francisco airports.  If we do elect to go to the Russian River, those airports are the closest major ones.  However, the closest airport to Russian River, which might eliminate the need for a rental car for some, is Santa Rosa (code: STS).  Horizon Air has announced they will resume service by the time of our gathering but I did not search out this option.  The fares below are round trip and may include certain restrictions.

Amazingly, some of the fares are remarkably low (no wonder the airlines are going bankrupt  >:().  The dates I put in included an arrival on the 12th and departure on the 18th.  Your specific travel might therefore change the fares.

SUMMARY OF SAMPLE AIRFARES

Hey Everyone,

Horizon Air has flights landing in Santa Rosa from Seattle and Los Angeles and Jet Blue will have flights landing in Santa Rosa beginning in May 07.  I do not have the times or rates available just heard a couple of local radio ads this week and thought this info may be of some help.  Have the best day

Southwest and Jet Blue fly into Oakland. They're not included on some of the big travel websites like Travelocity or Expedia, so if you live in a city served by Southwest and/or Jet Blue, it would be a good idea to check out the fares directly on their websites.

Hello Everyone:

We are now 4+ months away from our gathering in San Francisco.  So this morning I started checking airfares for myself and realized that a lot of the fares Robert and I posted above have come down--dramatically.   ;D

Just for reference, I only used Travelocity for this information, and I put in an arrival date of Thursday, Sept. 13th and a departure of Tuesday, Sept. 18th.

So if you are thinking of coming and haven't yet booked your ticket, seems like right now there are some bargains available.

Departing City                            SFO (San Francisco Intl.)/OAK (Oakland Intl.)

New York (JFK/LGA)                                  $303.00/$284.00
Raleigh/Durham (RDU)                                $244.00/$329.00
Seattle (SEA)                                            $246.00/$183.00
Portland (PDX)                                          $246.00/$183.00
Louisville (SDF)                                          $366.00/$323.00
Orlando (MCO)                                          $340.00/$244.00
Denver (DEN)                                           $301.00/$183.00
Austin (AUS)                                            $315.00/$264.00
Milwaukee (MKE)                                      $279.00/$486.00
Memphis (MEM)                                        $190.00/$410.00
Nashville (BNA)                                         $323.00/$324.00
Albequerque (ABQ)                                  $213.00/$230.00
Atlanta (ATL)                                          $337.00/$369.00
Omaha (OMA)                                         $200.00/$220.00
Chicago (CHI)                                         $204.00/$193.00
Dallas (DFW)                                          $253.00/$253.00
Fort Lauderdale (FLL)                              $227.00/$234.00
Kansas City (MCI)                                    $235.00/$283.00
Greensboro (GSO)                                  $266.00/$310.00
Miami (MIA)                                           $273.00/$294.00
Boston (BOS)                                        $335.00/$355.00
Birmingham (BHM)                                  $437.00/$302.00

London UK (LHR/LGW)                            $1122.00 (was a fare for under $900.00 a week ago but couldn't find it now)

Sydney                                                 $1724.00  (VIA Aukland on Air New Zealand)

For some reason I couldn't get the site to quote Canadian cities--not sure what I was doing wrong.

I paid something like $358 total when I bought my ticket in February.  It's on United, which I haven't flown since I was a child.  The most important thing I look for is a direct flight in the morning or midday, and that's what I got.  I should be at the hotel by noon on arrival day, and home by 4 on departure day.  Sweet!  I hate having connecting flights, although Detroit's "trippy tunnel" made that layover very pleasant last summer!

I purchased an 185.00 ticket from Memphis to San Fran with Frontier Airlines. they are starting air service in Memphis on May 12th. I think that is why I got such a good deal.

I can't wait!

USAirways is having a sale, I think, they fly to SFO, OAK, and SJC.  All flights will connect through PHX or LAS.  Check them out, sometimes they have really killer fares.
The difference between an overnight and a layover is luck!

Delta is really cheap now, too.  I got our tickets for around $245 each from NC to SFO.  That's just about half of what it cost to go to Montreal.  BTW, I searched for flights on sidestep.com.

SDCrew and David:

You guys are right there are some good fares right now (sidestep is a good place to search David I forgot about it).

We've seen this the last two years too.  It seems like the first week or so in May the airlines reduce their fares and then depending upon the kind of bookings they get they start moving them right back up

Hopefully those who haven't booked yet or are still thinking about coming won't wait too long and miss some of these good prices.

(Who is still amazed that it's just as cheap to fly from the East coast to SF as it is to fly from some of the cities on the West coast.   ???)

Both Delta and Continental have raised fares to most destinations by at least $10 roundtrip.  This will probably be the trend as we move through summer with most airlines to follow.

For those watching airline prices to SFO or OAK, the airlines typically make fare changes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

VIRGIN AMERICAN

Virgin American has finally received approval to offer domestic flights.  It is headquartered out of SF and will start selling tickets in few weeks and will start flying this summer.  I am sure there will be some great promotional fares.

Even though it is a domestic airline, it is associated with Virgin Atlantic.  I wouldn't be surprised if Virgin Atlantic will also do its share to promote the new airline so look for some new, discounted international fares too.

This is great news Robert.  I absolutely love Virgin Atlantic.

www.virginamerica.com

Virgin America’s first flights will be between its home base of San Francisco (SFO) to New York (JFK). The airline also plans to serve Los Angeles (LAX), Washington/Dulles, San Diego and Las Vegas within its first year of operations.

The airline expects to serve as many as 10 cities within a year of operation and up to 30 cities within five years of service. Additional cities under Virgin America’s consideration include: Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Hartford, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Kansas City, Miami, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Nashville, Newark, New Orleans, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Providence, Portland, Ore., Raleigh-Durham, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Jose, Calif., Sarasota, Seattle, St. Louis, Tampa and West Palm Beach.
