Does anyone have a good resource on regulations/restrictions on HIV positive healthcare workers?

What do you mean?...being able to treat patients?....as far as I know there arent restrictions...I could be wrong though..I dont see why there would be any.

Hi Armybent,

As it's your first post here, you might like to tell us more about yourself, like are you even hiv+?

There are quite a few of us health care workers on these forums, I'm a Nurse.  You will find that the best resource for what (if any) restrictions there might be will be in your workplace policy manuals, probably an infection control policy manual.  I know my work place (a major city hospital) has no restrictions on what HIV+ staff can and can't do.

Edited to add - the gist of it all is that you cannot do "exposure prone procedures" (EPPs). These are defined as when all or part of your hand is out of sight in a body cavity in the presence of something that might injure you and cause "bleed back" - bleeding into the patients tissues. This could be instrumentation or it could be spicules of bone. It rules out obvious stuff like surgery but you need to think laterally as well - a pelvic exam after suspected trauma is classed as an EPP as there may be boney fragments in the rectum and/or vagina that might injure you. On the other hand, suturing and stuff is fine as your hand is not hidden from view.

I am an HIV + nurse anesthetist.  I have checked the hospital policies where I work and have no restrictions-since I do not perform any EPP.

When I found out I was +, I researched on the net and after a lot of research, found that there are not many restrictions on Healthcare workers.
