I think this should answer your question.  You can just Google these terms to get the same result I got.

Yes, it is the generic of Truvada. I have been taking it for some time now (over a year).

Hi

Just checking for those who have tried RICOVIR_EM, are there any side effects or difference from using Truvada?

My doctor is advising me against using the generic drug. I have problem obtaining Truvada as it is not currently not available in BKK. Thanks for penning your feedback. Greatly appreciate it.

On a separate note, does anyone know where in BKK can I get Truvada? Thanks!

I have been on it for a few (2?) years now, it's the same thing, should be the same long term side effects as Truvada. My doctor is a prominent specialist of hiv in Thailand and advises the use of generics. Anyhow I am on meds since 15 years without major problems and the generics didn't change anything to that.
Are you sure there is no Truvada in BKK? Did you check BNH, BH, Bumrungrad and Anonymous Clinic?

Thanks guys for the response. Greatly appreciate it.
For me, I do not live in Bangkok and in Singapore where I live, Truvada is not commercially available as yet.

I have been getting from a pharmacy near Silom and during my trip there in July, I was told that they don't carry the stock and recommended me the generic drug. My doctor has recommended against trying the generic drug.

I will be making a trip there again in Aug and it is only a day trip. Can I easily get the medications from these places:
BNH, BH, Bumrungrad and Anonymous Clinic?

Also, do I need a local prescription to do so? Any other places or pharmacies in town that I can buy from?

Thanks again for all the help. I sincerely and greatly appreciate it.

Editing this because I seem to have made a mistake! 1000 apologies! Please carefully read the red for an explanation.
I'm sorry I haven't responded before, but I just saw your message. You can buy all your meds at all of those places, but the cheapest place by far to buy meds or get tests done is at the Red Cross Clinic. Going there can take half the day, though, so be patient.

Strangely, even though it's the nicest hospital I have ever seen (like a 5 star hotel), Bumrungrad is not too bad for getting the CD4 and VL done. BUT, my meds cost a lot more at Bumrungrad than Red Cross (I think the price they quoted me was almost double). So I now go to Bumrungrad for my tests, to see the doctor, and to get my prescription. Then I go to Red Cross to get meds. Keep in mind that even with your prescription, you'll have to wait and briefly see another doctor once you get to the Red Cross before you can get our meds - which is why it takes half the day. Here are some prices:

Red Cross -->I now think I was in Chulalongkorn Hospital which is apparently a different place!
VL: THB 3,000 = USD $95 (during office hours) --> Wrong, see next post.
CD4: THB 400 = USD $13 (only on Fri mornings) --> Wrong, see next post.
Truvada+Isentress (1 month): THB 18,080 = USD $585 --> at Chulalongkorn
(Scroll down to the next post in this thread to find directions and current Red Cross info. It can be hard to locate the first time.)
It's so hard to locate that I now think I was in the wrong place - twice! Either that or my horrible reaction to Efavirenz really got me confused. In defense of my sanity, my receipt has a red cross on it and says "Thai Red Cross Society       King Chulalongkorn Hotspital. Also, nobody there spoke English very well. So... please see my post here above for an idea of prices at a public hospital BUT don't make the same mistake I did. This place is apparently near the Thai Red Cross ANONYMOUS CLINIC on the same side of the street, but is not the same place. See JoeMutt's post(s) below for correct info about the Red Cross ANONYMOUS CLINIC. And meanwhile I'll keep my fingers crossed that when I DO find my way to the correct Red Cross Anonymous Clinic Bldg, they'll have my meds and they'll be cheaper."

Bumrungrad
VL: THB 4,900 = USD $160
CD4: THB 1,800 = USD $58
Truvada+Stocrin (1 month): THB 7,690 = USD $250
Other Meds: Don't know.
http://www.bumrungrad.com/en/search-for-a-thailand-doctor
Choose "Medicine - Inefctious Diseases" to find doctors. Mine is Dr. Asda.

Bangkok Mission Hospital (a.k.a. Bangkok Adventist Hospital)
VL: THB 9,000
CD4: THB 2,000
Meds: Don't know.
http://www.mission-hospital.org/
Dr. Nick Walters is supposed to be great.

Flying from Singapore, you can easily get this all handled within 2 days, possibly less once you've found your doctor and got your routine down. For example, if you fly down Sunday morning and go directly to Bumrungrad to have your blood drawn before 3pm, your results will be there at 9am the next morning. You can then see the doc, get your scrip, and go to Red Cross to buy your meds. You could conceivably fly home Mon evening (but I'd probably plan to stay one more day if possible). You may not be looking to do it all in Bangkok, but maybe somebody else is....

I hope this helps you or somebody else out there looking for medical care and current prices on a few meds and tests in Bangkok. Best of luck!
Again, I apologise for my mistake about the Red Cross. Thank you so much Joemutt for catching that. I still think the info above about Bumrungrad and Bangkok Mission Hospital are correct. Anyone else reading these posts about Bangkok who wants to go to the Red Cross Anonymous Clinic, please read carefully so you won't make the same mistake and end up in the wrong place like me. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately the above information about Anonymous Clinic at Red Cross is not exact or up to date.

Here are the opening hours :
Official opening hours:
Mon-Fri: 07:30-11:00, 12:00-18:00
Sat: 07:30-11:00, 12:00-15:00

For CD4 test:
Mon-Fri: 07:30-11:00, 12:00-15:00
Sat: 07:30-11:00

It is closed on Sunday and public holidays:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holidays_in_Thailand

VL costs 1500 THB
CD4 test costs 300 THB

Furthermore there are no doctors available there; that is why you must bring a prescription from outside.
On your first visit (registration and intake) you a/ register at the reception (initials or alias, you get a badge) and b/ a registered nurse opens a file and counsels about # tests, this will take some time.
Waiting for testing on next appointments will also take time but much less.
Tests are performed by technicians/nurses.

For only buying meds : from the second visit you a/ take your registration badge + prescription to the receptionist, b/ pay at the cashier and c/ retrieve your meds from the pharmacist; this takes maybe thirty minutes.

Anonymous Clinic is located 104 Rachadamri Road at the corner of Lumpini Park facing Sarasin Road. BTS station Rachadamri.

One question for Joemutt (or anybody else in Bangkok): I am not Thai and come to BKK for treatment because it is more affordable and I am hoping for confidentiality.

I am not worried about confidentiality at the other places, but now that I have realised I mistakenly registered at King Chulalongkorn Hospital and bought my meds there twice, do I have to worry about future problems with immigration?

Thanks in advance for any info anyone can offer about confidentiality at various hospitals in Thailand.

I am sorry this happened to you. Anonymous Clinic has your medicine @ 18780 thb (price April 2012), price will be similar as Chula Hospital and Anonymous are both run by Red Cross, so no regrets about that  :)

Further don't worry; there is no rule/law against people with hiv coming into thailand. Neither is there a law against carrying your own meds. Confidentiality at Chula must be the same as at other hospitals, I am registered under my real name at quite a few hospitals (because of moving and such) and have never experienced a problem nor have I heard of any. That said, the social stigma is still very big, contrary to accepted opinion, and that's why there seems to be a need for an Anonymous Clinic (well, they deal with all std's).

In the hospitals you name  you will need to see a doctor first to get a prescription, even for buying meds at that hospital's pharmacy. At Anonymous Clinic you need to bring a prescription from an outside doctor. If you never met the doctor before he will want to see some recent lab results.
