Dates for AMG '08
« on: January 30, 2008, 04:28:11 am »
Hi everyone

Now that we have decided that August will be the Month for the AMG, maybe it's time to think about dates.

I have a couple of suggestions that I would like to put forward...just to get things started.

First suggestion...To start the AMG on Saturday the 9th of August (the IAC finishes up on Friday the 8th) to the 13/14th (Wednesday/Thursday) of August.

OR

Second suggestion...To start the AMG from the 13/14th (Wednesday/Thursday) to the 18/19th (Monday/Tuesday)

These are just suggestions so please feel free to have your say and let me know what you think about the dates I have put forward, if these dates don't work for you then please let us know what dates would be better for you,..we need to get things going on this, the AMG is only 6 months away, once we decide on a date then we can really start getting things organized

Thanks in advance

Hugs

Totally in agreement with you on this, Jan. Time to get the ball rolling on this segment of preparations. I could have booked a bargain flight to MC already but the dates had not been decided upon yet. We really need a window of several months to do any bargain shopping on flights.

I like the idea of arriving there just when the IAC (International Aids Conference) ends....so I would vote it begins on the 9th of August. Although the least costly flights are usually midweek....at substantial savings most times.......sometimes,  it doesn't make a difference.

is there any way of finding out whether people who are attending the conference will be spending the weekend in the city after the conference? cos if lots of them are doing that then hotel space may be difficult to come by/expensive the weekend of the 9th aug

Does one conference really effect things in a city with a population of 25 million?

Hi Niki

That why I suggested the two dates because it's hard to tell just how many hotels will be available right after the IAC and how many will want to spend the weekend there to wind down after the Conference before heading home...so availability, how do prices compare from weekend to Mid week really need to be looked into, Do we have anyone from or near that area who can check this out for us?

Lets get more feed back  if we can about the dates, then we can start looking at hotels, I think Iggy is right though I don't think getting a hotel will be too much of a problem.

I'm pretty useless when it comes to computers but I will certainly try and have a look to see what will be available..but we need to find out what dates suit everyone.

Once we have settled on a date then we can start looking for help from our members..i.e AMG coordinator, grants committee etc, etc...
Thanks

Hugs

I like the second dates... the week after the IAC mainly because that's how the last two AMG's were (Wed to Tues).  Either would work fine for us, actually.  Jan, does this mean that you'll be gracing us with your presence again this year?  I sure hope everybody from last year can attend along with lots of new people!

Anxious myself!  The sooner we can pin down August dates, the sooner I can make sure there isn't a work conflict.  I am even trying to learn some Spanish (although my progress leaves much to be desired!)  At this juncture either of the two proposed times will work for me.

Agreed, either sets of dates are cool. Grad school starts on Monday August 25. I just need a set of dates so that I can request off from my job. The sooner the better!

I like the second set of date simply because it is consistent with what we've done in the past.

But, I am good to go for any date in August. Once we decide, I will be able to put in my leave request.

Oh, Dame Jan, are you going to be able to make it again this year? That would be so awesome.

I am already looking forward to this.

HUGS,

Mark

Yea!  It sounds like more of the same fine people from last year and some great new attendees.

I'm torn.

I like the idea of being in Mexico City just following the conference (Proposal 1) as I think there may still some momentum in the city of people who attended the conference.

I do think though that Proposal 2 makes more sense as it allows people to be in Mexico City for a full weekend when there may be more planning opportunities for the coordinator as well as people wanting to do their own thing.
