Welcome to Do I Have HIV?

Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

Blood on my Hands to Eye

Hi,

I have a 6 month old puppy which loves to lick people's hands. Recently my dog licked the hands of my new gardener who happens to be HIV +. He generally tends to have cuts on his hand due to the nature of his work. Immediately after that my dog licked my hands.
I generally tend to wash my hands immediately after but this one time I forgot to and I think I rubbed my eyes and nose with my hands which probably had a bit of my gardener's blood on them.

Am I at risk? Is it possible that the blood mixed with my dogs saliva poses a transmission risk? Plz note this whole incident took place in a matter of minutes. Thank you.

You have absolutely nothing to worry about . Hiv is a fragile virus and cant survive outside the HUMAN body , its instantly damaged and rendered unable to infect when exposed to oxygen . 

Saliva has HIV inhibiting property's as well . You would not have been at risk if your gardener bled on you , much less from a dogs mouth . These are the risk factors for HIV .

Sharing IV drug needles immediately after use.
Unprotected anal and vaginal sex.
Mother to child during or shortly after birth
Very specific healthcare situations.

You will not get HIV from anyone unless you have unprotected vaginal or anal sex or share drug injection equipment immediately after and infected person . Do not worry about being around HIV positive people , no one has ever been infected unless the criteria in those risk factors have been met .

Hi Jeff,

I appreciate the quick reply. I feel like I can breathe again. But I have read online that some people have been infected through blood in their eyes as it is a mucous membrane. Is it true or just internet hyperbole?

You need to stop searching the web to just feed your fears and all to no good purpose. Jeff has given you the real deal about risks.

Stay off the net, there's no need for testing and just get on with your life. Really.

If you had a gush of arterial blood into the eye its theoretically possible but keep in mind that is something rare indeed . In the 30 + years of the aids epidemic there are only a scant few infections attributed to anything other than the risk factors I outlined and even then all things have to line up into a perfect storm of circumstances . It just doesn't happen in the real world .

Its hard for most people to fully grasp how hard it is for an HIV infection to occur in the first place . HIV is a rather hard virus to transmit because its so very fragile and requires a strict set of circumstances in order to infect .
