Hi
This is the first 3 lines of the so called "Story" the interviewer is doing on me for the 'de-stig" campaign, I stopped reading at this point..before I say anything..can any of you tell me what is wrong with this.

Hi my name is Jan and I'm HIV Positive. Let me tell you, you don't have to be a Prostitute or an Idiot to catch it. I contracted HIV from a Dirty needle, from an HIV patient, not from Injecting heroin

She didn't know what hit her...I ripped her a good one, so needless to say that will not be going into my "Story"

Her question to me was.."so it's not just prostitutes and drug addicts who are living with HIV..my answer was "absolutely not" so how the hell she came up with those first 3 lines is beyond me, they certainly never came from me.

She argued that they were trying to take away the stigma from Women...so apparently to do that we have just have to pass it on to everyone else..Jesus I was ropeable.

Jan, that was an incredible opening line..has this person been involved in any of this program before now? I am so happy you set her straight...will the entire "campaign be available on line so we can see it here in the States?
I know you will really watch what this person writes now, but don't let her out of your sight when any interviews or discussions are being held.....

Wow, Jan. I'm glad you gave her a piece of your mind! You know, the first visit I had to my old ID doctor was kind of disasterous like that. He knew I was a recovering addict, but I distinctly told him my ex-husband was HIV+. Well, he had a sheet he would fill out on all his HIV+ patients telling what risk category they were in (for statistical purposes I'm sure) and he put me down as an IV drug user. I could've dropped him right there.

Sitting here with Jeromy looking at the boards, and I think his reaction sums it up best. His jaw dropped!

After I took advatadge of the situation, we both agreed the irony of a campaign to combat stigma done by promoting stereotypes should be the start of a new section on AIDSMEDS, sort of a annual award of worst slaps oin the faces to people with HIV and AIDS. We could call them the side effects or some other garbage.

All jokes aside, your reaction, and subsequent tearing of a new hole on the org is why I reiterate my pride in having you be a representative face of us. You proved that more that you will ever realize!

It's funny you should say that Cindy..a very dear friend of mine from here called me to tell me they interupted a programme on TV he was watching for a news flash saying there had been an eruption on the South Island..then relaxed a little when he found out it was only me letting off steam..

well, unfortunately that is a typical sort of thing for any number of people in the world. You can not imagine the number of people working in rehabilitative roles with our consumers in the community (not with my agency mind you) who use words like gimp, dirty, stupid, etc to describe disabilities. Its people's existential anxiety that makes them this way. I mean, hey, if you think only drug addicts, hookers, or other "social rejects" (their idea) can get HIV or anything else, then that frees the person to eat, drink and screw without impunity. makes me hate our culture at times. I think the title of this thread sums it up, Jan.

That the interviewer tried to attribute these words to you is dispicable.

So now we have an acceptable intro and one more young lady in the world that is educated--who now know how to properly communicate thoughts regarding HIV infections. Or one can hope.
We find this intro more acceptable as long as it accompanies that gorgeous portrait, Jan. Great pic/nice intro!

Seriously though, um, I don't think I would have left her standing either...and yes the second take is MUCH better...I hope to hell that the journalist realizes that you can't take creative license with real people's stories!
