Title: Starting Meds after all these years
Post by: bear60 on September 21, 2012, 03:59:03 pm
Seems that there is no choice anymore,  Even for us Non Progressors.  Its meds or meds......nothing in between.  I believe (my opinion is)  that the doctors feel that as we age,  our cell replication (including T Cell replication) slows or at least produces less vital cells.  (Compared to when we were younger.)
So.....my doctor is prescribing COMPLERA  for me.  Its fairly new, and is a one a day pill. Luckily.
The thoughts about treatment have swung back to everyone with HIV be on meds.

Joel, I've got a couple clients on Complera and they've had no issues with it.   I'm sure this is a big step for you, but I know you'll be alright.

so have your numbers changed, or this just because aging ages the cells?
are your numbers at a place that you'll be able to see any change/difference after your start?

best of luck with the drugs ;) They're not so bad, and most everyone is doing them LOL :D

Hey Joel,

As Betty said, I know several people who take Complera with no problem.

Let us know how it goes.

HUGS,

Mark

leatherman...actually my numbers HAVE changed. ( But even if they hadnt my doc would put me on meds simply due to the fact I am almost 70 years old)
Always been above 500, my CD4 is now 384.  But hey, I got 24 years out of it. I hear I'll feel much better and stop sleeping 12hours a day.
Thanks for the encouragement Betty, Mark and Ann.

well Joel, I guess that time has come my friend.   I have a good friend on Complera, he has done GREAT with it.  I hope it goes as smoothly for you.

Keep us posted, and hugs to you

Alan

Hey Joel,

Good luck with starting the meds.  And yes, you got a good long run without them.  I went 18 years, before I started on meds ( It almost killed me ) But when the doc said I needed to start  ( or else),..  I couldn't, start them fast enough.

I know your not in the position, that I was in, back in 2003... but you should do very well. Your post, reminded me of all those years , that I didn't need meds,( seemed like such a long time ago). Made me reflect back, and wished I whould have done things differently. Can't look back, got to look forward.

And also, after I started on meds, I didn't have to sleep, 12-15 hours a day anymore. 8 hours does me just fine now.  :)

Take care, let us know how everything is going for you. You'll do well !

My goodness! I was an LTNP until this year, also. Just started drugs a couple weeks ago after likely 28 years. Virus finally mutated around my relative immunity. CD4 plus was also 700-900, VL always aouind 2,000. It finally got the upper hand, mutating. Maybe our age?  I am 56 now.

Bear:

My guess we are going through the same sort of thought right now.  And now we've got to learn to live with an "entirely, unsuspected reality" we never thought we'd be experiencing.
