Condom Break
« on: July 17, 2008, 07:08:06 pm »
I know that unprotected oral sex is only theoretical risk and iinternal ejaculation in both anal/vaginal sex increases the risk of getting HIV and other diseases.

what about swallowing? and ejaculation in one's mouth? what are the risks for the receiver? assuming, of course, the shooter is HIV + orhave any other STD

Zero, HIV is not transmitted in that manner.

We do hear from time to time of someone who claims they became infected through giving oral. Those claims never seem to hold up under scientific scrutiny. By contrast longterm studies of both gay and straight sero-discordant couples who had lots of mutual unprotected oral and only protected vaginal and anal intercourse have resulted in not a single sero-negative partner having become infected.

Common sense should tell you that  if you poor oral health or recent surgery or a wound in your mouth that giving oral is not a good idea until you're healed. So you have to decide where your comfort zone is and act accordingly.

Cheers,

Condom Break
« Reply #3 on: November 12, 2008, 07:03:39 am »
A few hours ago, I had sex with a guy (i was the bottom). He said he was HIV negative. but the condom broke twice

the first condom broke on the side of the condom
the second one broke right on the tip of the penis area

it was dark and I have never done bareback (so i dowuldnt know whats the difference between condom/bareback)

He told me that the condom didnt break when he was in me. The first one broke when we were adjusting the position. the second one broke, i am not sure how it broke. when i pulled it out, the condom was pretty sticky, and I may have pulled it out too hard (hence the broke was located right on the tip of the penis area).

as i said it was dark( really dark) so I didnt really know what was going on. I collected the condom and checked them at home and asked him after I got home.

So what are the chances of me getting infected (he didnt ejaculate in me, if that matters). and how effective is PEP?

lala,

I've merged your new thread into your original thread - where you should post all your additional thoughts or questions. It helps us to help you when you keep all your additional thoughts or questions in one thread.

If you need help finding your thread when you come here, click on the "Show own posts" link under your name in the left-hand column of any forum page.

Please also read through the Welcome Thread so you can familiarize yourself with our Forum Posting Guidelines. Thank you for your cooperation.

PEP is effective. If you feel you want to embark on this 28 day regimen of toxic drugs, then you need to get to a doctor who can prescribe it to you correctly in no more than 72 hours after the event. Initiating PEP within 36 hours is best.

I'm  not so sure you really need PEP as he didn't ejaculate inside you and it sounds as though the condoms broke when he was trying to enter you. This would eliminate the risk of precum also. It's your call - you were there, I wasn't.

It also sounds as though you two weren't using enough lube. Lube would have kept this from happening. Please read through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can make sure they're being used correctly in future. A correctly used condom rarely breaks.

You're right. We didnt use enough lube.

Just came back from ER. My doctor only prescribed the medication for a week.

is Truvada the right med? he told me to take it once a day. My exposure was a few hours ago (4-5 hours) and i just took the medicine. How effective is this treatment? I mean what are the chances of me getting infected if the guy is in fact hiv +

I read in some other thread that PEP delays your window period. does it mean i have to get tested at 4 months instead of 3?

How soon can i know that i'm not exposed. I know that i have to get tested 3 months after the possible exposure to be certain. but from your experience, how soon can a test be "reliable" enough? 14 days? 21 days?

Thanks

You'll be on PEP for 28 days and you can get your conclusive test result 3 months past your last dose of PEP.

Truvada (tenofovir DF + emtricitabine, TDF + FTC) is given to people with HIV.

Read the lesson section on PEP. That is one of the combo of drugs used for PEP.

Given what you have reported your risk level was very low during this broken condoms incident. PEP has a high rate of success and especially the earlier it is begun.

My opinion is that you are very likely to come out of this incident ok. You need to get busy with other productive things in your life. That will help the waiting time pass much more quickly and less stressfully. And yes, you really can be disciplined about focusing on other things.

Thanks for the reply Andy/Rapirod

@rapidrod
I read the PEP lesson, it doesnt mention anything about Truvada

my last question.

My doctor told me that I should only take truvada for 6 days and it should be enough to prevent HIV infection.

but Aidsmeds/some reliable sites said I need to take it for at least 28 days for it to work.

The current PEP regimen, so far as I am aware, is 28 days. If there has been scientific evidence to the contrary, it certainly has not come across the POZ.COM desk, and those guys rarely miss anything quite that groundbreaking. Not sure from whence your doctor got his information.

BTW, PEP is indeed HIV drugs, many of the same drugs used to combat existing HIV infection. The two are one and the same.

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

lala,

It's a shame that in your web-surfing you didn't come across the fact that Truvada is TWO drugs rolled into one pill. These two drugs are sufficient when used for PEP. You'd only need a third drug if you were actually hiv positve.

I really don't expect you to ever need the third drug as a result of the incident you bring to us.

no ann. i did find out that Truvada was a comination of 2 drugs. but they stilll suggest to take it along with other drugs..

http://www.truvada.com/

    *  Does not cure HIV or AIDS
    * Has not been shown to lower your chance of passing HIV to others
    * Should only be taken in combination with other drugs for HIV

lala,

Did you read my WHOLE post, particularly this bit...?

These two drugs are sufficient when used for PEP. You'd only need a third drug if you were actually hiv positve.

It's standard practice to give only two drugs for PEP.
