possible hiv infection incident?
« on: October 08, 2008, 08:11:05 am »
at my work, there is someone who just got all 4 wisdom teeth taken out like a couple days ago... now, yesterday we were sharing some crackers and dip... then i realized that the blood from his mouth due to the surgery might have gotten onto the crackers we were sharing...

when he puts the crackers in her mouth, his saliva mixed with blood got on his fingers and then he reached for more crackers, and thus i am led to believe that the crackers got contaminated with his saliva and blood.

how likely can you get hiv from this scenario? isn't it like sharing needles in a way?? Thanks.

julio,

This isn't even remotely like sharing needles. Hiv is NOT transmitted via food or any other surface in the environment.

Along with reading the Transmission Lesson linked to in our Welcome Thread, here's what you need to know in order to protect yourself from hiv:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT NEED TO TEST OVER THIS FOOD INCIDENT, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

yes but if blood from his mouth got on his fingers and then he touched the food, wouldn't the blood be transmitted to the food and then i would put it in my mouth, and then that might be an infection?

of course hiv is not transmitted by sharing food, but that is when no one is bleeding... i am talking about a scenario when someone is bleeding and might contaminate outside objects such as food with it.

julio,

You cannot become infected with hiv from food, no matter what's in the food.

i don't get it...

so you are saying that even though there might be hiv infected blood in the food, and then you put the food in your mouth, that is not a risk?

That's exactly what Ann is saying, HIV is not tramsmitted in this way, it would help you understand ibetter f you read the lessons here on how HV is and is not transmitted..and read the Welcome thread while you are at it.
