Title: Probability of acquiring the disease
Post by: Vin.ca on June 18, 2012, 03:28:28 pm
Hi All,

the last 3 days of my life has been in its down fall when me and my partner tested for HIV and he turned positive and for me it's the opposite (for now). Ive been with him for only 6 weeks (3rd of May) and that's the first time we had sex. I'm always the active one though one time, he penetrated me with no protection. It was very brief because I was uncomfortable about it and we stopped.

I don't wanna sound very sexual, but for more than a month, I can only count that we had sex only for 3-4 times and always finish it with a hand job.

As I've read from this site that the window period for confirmation would be 3 months after the exposure... I still wanna convince myself that when I test again it would still be negative.

Please help of how I can make my mind at peace, because I know that there's a big chance that I will have it. For now, what can you advise to enhance my immune function more? I'm really worried and concerned, but I know that I will be strong to accept whatever it will be.

Hope to hear from you all,

Many thanks

You will need to be tested at least 13 weeks after your last sexual encounter without a condom.

There really isn't anything in particular that you can do to "enhance" your immune system.

In the meantime try to keep your mind busy with other things and make sure that if you have any sexual relations with your partner you always use a condom (whether you are the top or not --not sure based on your entry if you had penetrated him without one).

thanks for reply. but my partner and I are not together anymore. We have decided to separate for a reason but still would support each other no matter what.

Ok.  For now just wait till it is time for your test.

One thing I failed to mention in my initial reply is that we will be removing the survey that you included in this thread.  This is not allowed within this section of the forums.  Be sure to read our posting guidelines and rules thread (http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=220.0) to prevent any other future mistakes.

Good luck with your test.

As Moon mentioned, the poll has been removed. That sort of thing has never been helpful in this setting.

Good luck with your test. Keep us posted.

OK. You're doing the smart thing by getting tested. You've had relatively few and brief risks, the most risky having been the one time you were receptive. Hopefully you will make it through safely.

Good luck to you.

Thank you Andy, It is comforting yet still at the risky stage no matter what. Well, for now there's nothing i can do but to wait for 3 months after contact and submit to testing again.

Though the waiting would give me an edge to prepare for the result whatever it will be. I think it would be easier than the first time that we have know that my partner has it and i dont (for now).

I know all you guys would help me through the staging incase i would turn positive, i will sure update you with my results soon.

Many thanks

You can test initially at 6 weeks. If you get a negative at that point then it is likely you will continue to be negative at 3 months.

I'll that in mind, and your words are very uplifting. Thank you. I have a few question though about the test, because i asked my friend who conducted the test for me and partner, and she said they performed a quantitative hiv test for antigen and antibodies. And in both i was negative on my 6 weeks. Please can you further clarify. Im not sure if she's talking about ELISA or Western Blot

It sounds as though she is referring to a dual test, which is both ELISA and Western Blot.

Vin,

It sounds more like a duo test, which tests for both the p24 antigen plus hiv antibodies. The p24 antigen is only present in the first few weeks. Once antibodies are created at around week three, the p24 antigen disappears.

The Western Blot is normally only used if the antibody (or p24) test is positive. The WB is used to rule out false positive results. I've never heard of a "bundled" antibody/WB test. They are separate tests.

Your six week negative is highly unlikely to change, but must be confirmed at the three month point.

Thanjs, Ann. I was thinking that in my head but my brain refused to type it correctly.

I hate when that happens!

You can help me out next time my brain plays games, ok?  :)

Hello Ann,

First, thanks for clearing up ELISA and WB, to make all things clear, I would submit to testing after 3 months anyway, so make sure of my status, but again, thank you.

Also, apologies for not reading the welcome message, its very irresponsible of me and im sorry for any inconvinience caused.
