Interesting article over twenty something women choosing unsafe sex over protection (in this case mostly the pill).

Anyone else find the idea that the pill or pull out method is regarded as safe amongst heterosexuals bizarre?

Sometime last week I saw a quotation about the state of STI knowledge among British youth, and particularly about HIV, and the person said that knowledge was abysmal to non-existent.
I can't find the quote, now... Sorry.
I started my college years hetero and then was bi for quite a few years and then finally gay. Interestingly, these years were the same years that HIV was discovered, then its suspected transmission routes, then the suggested safer sex practices....
Almost all the women I slept with were well aware that the diaphragm and the pill prevented pregnancy and most had one or the other. Very few asked for condoms and neither I nor they thought much about STI prevention. The game was birth control...
Nobody used the pull out method.. In my experience. That's just dumb.
This was early to mid 80s.
But in my sex with men the rules changed VERY rapidly and quite universally and it was about not getting AIDS and dying...
I don't really understand your point about the pill or pull out being "safe". Everyone knows the pill prevents pregnancy. Pull out - not so much. Nobody thinks this protects from STIs. Nobody is saying condomless sex is "safe". People are doing it for any number of reasons, despite the fact that it is a risk for STIs.
The article seems to present a pretty full description of all the ways heteros are screwing. I don't find it bizarre.
Now if heteros are claiming they are not at risk for STIS and HIV in particular, that is ignorant. But not so bizarre. Because some people are ignorant.

Our Education system is tied up in Knots about Sex Education-----Catholics/Muslin's big no no. Our Government heroic scum bags will not draw any lines in the sand about it. They sprout words such as Parental choice / and allowing each School to make its own Policy. Therefore any School that does see it as important has NO support from any authority, local or national.
Result a mess and thick kids , who too Quickly become thick parents.

Every time I see the "Seinfeld" episode where Kramer walks in the AIDS Walk, I always feel puzzled by the episode. Elaine is interviewing her sex partner about how clean his bathroom is and wants him to make a case for sex, because she has to use her sponges sparingly, as that birth control device was taken off the market. He replies his blood tests are immaculate and that he cleaned his bathroom. She asks whether he is going to do something about his side burns. Then, they have sex.
I always wonder whether they were making a statement how straight folks don't even think about HIV. I can't figure out why they would put Elaine having bareback sex in an episode about the fight against AIDS. Or, did they not even see the contradiction? Anyway, these kinds of threads always remind me of that episode.
