Fluconazole treatment for Crypto meningitis
« on: April 12, 2017, 01:02:20 am »
Last year I was diagnosed with Cryto meningitis, the doctors stated that I was probably with in 12 hours of death to my spouse.  I was in ICU for 12 days with inter cranial pressure monitor and drains to help relieve the pressure from the crypto and my brain had already started to herniate from my skull.  My question is has anyone else been treated with Fluconazole for crypto, if so how long did you remain on the medication?  Did you have to have a special test to see if the crypto was still in your system?  I was also treated with Amp - B for 16 days I.V. while in the hospital.

Hi, I'm not a doctor. Here's what google brought up.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3140144/

It looks like 8-10 weeks minimum but you could end up on a maintenance therapy to prevent reoccurrence.
You'll need to have a suppressed viral load a stable cd4 counts before discontinuing.

Thanks for finding that information, I had googled what I thought I was looking for but seen everything except what I actually wanted to find, lol.  My VL is now undetectable for about 2-3 months and my CD4 is up to 263 so it is on the rise.  My original CD4 when I was admitted and diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and Crypto was at 20, it has taken a year to get this far but I continue to push on forward.

Congratulations on your ever improving results. I'm glad the meningitis has passed.
I'm guessing your doctor is wanting to make sure your blood results are very stable.

At least now you have some solid information, so that your conversation with your doctor is an informed one.
My best wishes to you and your spouse.
