Get Well Soon Melia UPDATE
« on: June 18, 2006, 04:31:06 pm »
Hey everybody,

I hope you will all join me in sending Melia (aka sweetasmeli) some Get Well Soon messages.

She rang me this morning from the UK (she's visiting family) to talk about a rash she is experiencing. She was told yesterday by a doc that it wasn't shingles... but that doc was dead wrong. From what she was describing, it was most definitely shingles! I advised her to get to the hospital as soon as possible so she could be put on valacyclovir (or acyclovir) and she texted me late in the afternoon to say that she has been admitted and put on a high-dose acyclovir drip as there was some concern that she is also getting an outbreak on her face.

We talked on the phone again this evening and she's doing ok, although a bit upset at having to be admitted. I'm just glad she's finally getting the proper care she needs. (I could just kick that doc she saw yesterday!) They now think she won't have an additional outbreak on her face and so she's hoping to be discharged in a day or so instead of the week she was originally told. Fingers crossed!

Melia says she drops in to the forums to read regularly, but hasn't re-registered yet. She says she will do when she's got internet access again so I'm hoping she'll have a nice long get well thread to welcome her back.

Get Well Soon Melia!

I hope you take good advantage of all that pampering you'll be getting in the next couple weeks. ;) Love ya Sweetie!

Hugs... gentle ones!  :-*

When I had them, I went to the clinic where I always went for HIV care.  A nice Irish girl who is a nurse and transplanted herself to California, diagnosed immediately and I was treated that same afternoon.

Let's all kick the stuffing out of that Doctor because, there is an Irish nurse in California who knows more that he does

I spoke to Melia late this afternoon - rather briefly as the battery on my wireless phone ran out - but I had the chance to read most of your replies to her. She was absolutely delighted!

The good news is that she was allowed home today. I didn't get all the details due to my wonky phone, but I'll ring her tomorrow after she's had a good night's rest at her parents house. (like most of us, she HATES hospitals!)

But thank you all so much for your replies. It was priceless listening to her reactions as I read them to her and I know she appreciates your kindness very much.

Dearest Melia....

I am grateful to Ann for posting this news about you...so many times these past few months, I have wondered how you were.

Very, very sorry to hear about the attack of shingles, so glad you sought treatment (Good Call, Ann!), that soon you'll be on the mend.

I've missed your intelligence, your verve, your insights. Hoping to hear from you directly, soon.

With all my best wishes,

Another update on Melia,

She's having a difficult time with the acyclovir she's been sent home from the hospital with. She was told to take 800mgs five times a day... that sounds like twice what she should be taking! So, on top of the regular crappola from the shingles, she's also been having to deal with nausea, headaches and lightheadedness. She managed to speak to a doctor on the phone this evening who told her to stop taking the acyclovir completely for now and see her clinic doc or GP first thing tomorrow.

Poor Melia.... things just aren't going her way at all at the moment. She was supposed to be going back home to Greece at the end of the week, but it doesn't sound as though she'll be able to.

So please, keep sending those positive vibes and good wishes Melia's way. She sure needs them!

"YEIA KAI XARA!"Yasas (hello) to everyone!

A big thank you to Ann for starting this thread and thanks to all of you for your kind get well wishes :)

I'm back home in Greece - got back last night. Feeling very tired and achey and bit annoyed that I have this - but at least the sun is shining here 8) - not that I can go out and enjoy it yet though, have to wait for the rash to clear up! :-\

Its been a while since I posted - the past 6 months or so have been pretty tough for me due to one thing or another - which is probably why I now have this delightful dose of shingles! But even though I haven't posted, I have thought about the people I met on here and I have popped in and browsed messages quite often.

Anyway, I've finally re-registered now, so no doubt I'll be popping up again sometime soon...meanwhile, I'm going to go and rest now and try not to scratch, dammit!

Thanks again for your kind messages! Take care and stay well!

Melia :)
