First VL blip, not too happy about it....

Just got the results of my latest labs from the doc, and my viral load blipped up to 80.  Yeah, I know, not supposed to be a big deal but I don't feel that good about it.  I've only been positive and taking meds for several months, and only had two undetectable tests in a row before this one coming in at 80.  Is that common?  Do blips happen somewhat often, or only every several years (for you LTS people)?

The doc didnt' seem concerned, but mentioned to "keep swallowing those pills"  I've been perfectly compliant, and have, hand on heart, never missed a dose.  My CD4 is good though, up to 915, at 40% and a 1.00 ratio to the CD8.  Everything else checked out ok, just a little bummed by this viral load blip.  Didn't think it would happen so soon.  Haven't changed my regimen either, Truvada and Kaletra it remains......sigh......

It is not uncommon for your numbers to do a bit of dancing around during the first year, and occasionally longer. It takes your body time to fully acclimate to the new demands being made of it. It is good that you are being compliant with your regimen, so just hang in there. Make sure you make whatever life changes in your power to assist your body in being the best it can be in the duration.
Drink lots(LOTS) of water, get adequate rest, reduce stresses, and try to eat a balanced diet. Forge on soldier.    :)

Hey Patrick,
We all have those blips in the numbers game. Just think the lab had a bad day, not your body.
Remember, we're looking for trends over time.
Keep it up. You're doing great ... so great, I'd kill for your numbers ... so watch your back! :-X

Patrick,

Try not to let this bother you. I have had blips over the past five years larger than yours, and they have always gone back to undetectable. And like your doctor, mine said the same thing also. Take your meds on time and don't miss or skip doses.

Current Meds ; Viramune / Epzicom Eliquis, Diltiazem. Pravastatin 80mg, Ezetimibe. UPDATED 2/18/24
 Tested positive in 1985,.. In October of 2003, My t-cell count was 16, Viral load was over 500,000, Percentage at that time was 5%. I started on  HAART on October 24th, 2003.

 As of Oct 2nd, 2023, Viral load Undetectable.
CD 4 @676 /  CD4 % @ 18 %
Lymphocytes,absolute-3815 (within range)

Hey Patrick,

I had a blip about 18 months ago and it drove me crazy. It was the first I had had in more than 10 years.

It was only 65, but still, it was detectable and it bugged the living daylights out of me.

Turned out the blood sample hadn't been handled properly and hadn't been frozen fast enough so the results were a bit off.

As Lisa said, these things happen, so hang in there.

With a great CD4 like yours, I am sure your viral load will soon be undetectable again.

Thanks for all the support guys, I really appreciate it!  :)  Mark, how did you find out that your sample had been mishandled?  I cannot imagine if I called up the lab, that they'd be able to know, much less be willing to admit if my sample had been mishandled.  I'm glad that's all it was for you, just curious how you found that out!

Hey Patrick,

In this case, it was the phlebotomist who didn't get things done fast enough. She let the sample sit around for a day before sending it, which is not a good thing.

My doc tracked it down for me. I went to a different clinic to have the blood draw and they didn't know what they were doing. The doc had some choice words for them after he talked to them about what had happened.

Basically, your doc would have to chase it down for you.

We no longer send people to that clinic for HIV labs. Other labs, like lipids, sure, but not the viral load or CD4. For the latter, everyone goes to the local hospital.
