Doctors in Maryland
« on: August 04, 2011, 07:29:07 pm »
Is anyone familiar with Dr. offices or ASO's in Cecil County Maryland?  Especially in the Northeast and Rising Sun area.

I've enrolled in school there for the spring semester and have to decide if I want to stay in Pa. or move to Md.

I know nothing about Md. except for the beaches, the bay, and the liquor stores.

Thanx,
Michelle :)

Michelle, is that at all close to Baltimore?  Johns Hopkins Hospital is one of if not the best HIV research institutes in the country.  Even if it was a drive it would definately be worth a consideration.

Cecil County is actually closer to Wilmington, DE and technically as far as the federal government is concerned with MSA's (Metropolitan Statistical Areas) it's grouped in the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD region, not Baltimore.  It's over an hour drive to Baltimore, 30 minutes to Wilmington, DE and an hour to Philadelphia.

If it was me I would consider living in Wilmington and driving to school in Cecil Co., that way you can use this as your ASO: http://www.delawarehiv.org/ or this: http://www.aidsdelaware.org/

Wilmington is technically not a huge place, but it seems much larger because from there to Philly there's no break so it just seems like one big city. If you don't desire that type of atmosphere you may wish to consider living somewhere like Newark, DE where the Univ. of Delaware is, as that's right on the border of Cecil Co. MD, so more of a small town vibe but also a college town so it's not completely dead. Additionally Newark is the last stop for SEPTA, which is the regional commuter rail system for the Philadelphia area, so while you'd drive to Cecil you could take the train into Wilmington or even Philadelphia and avoid traffic/parking hassles (though I think maybe the Newark portion only operates during rush hours, not sure). Actually there's also DART (Delaware Transit) buses from Newark, DE to Elkton, MD which is in Cecil.

Thanks Miss Philicia, I really didn't know how far from Baltimore it was.  I didn't know DE. was so close,  I'm only about 45 min. from the school right now.   Monday I have an appointment with my ID Dr. and am going to talk to him about it, I have to talk to him about me going to Africa anyhow.

Yes if John Hopkins isn't to far I would definately consider that.   I have about 3 months to make a final decision.   It's the winter that could be a problem, as most people know PA. is horrible about their roads, especially down in the southern end

It will also depend on ADAP and/or Medicaid rules.

Sorry I didn't get back to you Bug, I was depressed and went to my uncles cabin with my "friends" Ketal One, OJ, Chambord and some shoot 'em up playstation games.

Yea!!! I finally got on here.

My dad knows I've always wanted to go to Africa on a Safari trip.   The church he goes to is putting together a missions trip to Africa in 2013 and he said he will pay half of my costs if I go. According to him
since it's with his church it's better then going by myself.

One of the nurses that has been packing my stupid arm is going along, her and I have become friends so I will at least know someone.   I had to think about the offer from him though.  I consider it rather ironic that him and his wife don't want their church friends knowing about my AIDS and in this case people will have to be told.   He is such a briber but if I can go I will take him up on the offer.

First I want to get into school, and then go from there.  It will cost about $2,000  for the air ticket and I imagine I will buy tons of souvenir's to bring home.

Good luck with the Africa trip, Michelle. One question though, you say "people will have to be told" about your hiv. Why? Nobody needs know, certainly not fellow travellers on a trip abroad. Unless you want to tell them, that is.

Ann,

I would have to turn in a list of prescription meds I have to take along.  They do that so that if something happens to you they can tell the doctors in case you can't.  You don't have to say what they are for, just the names of them.  I have no problem with that,  I carry a list of my meds in my car and a weeks worth of meds in my purse anyhow.

After all when I lived in Az. I used to feed the coyotes by hand if I could.   In CO. I bought a fox in the house because it was cold out and the poor thing was hurt.    My family figures I would be the one person to try and pet a lion.  My mommy has the head- line all figured out  "Girl mauled says "awwww cute kitty" as her last words."   ;)

On the original note, I drove around the area of the college and liked it.  Next month I will check out DE. and want to go to an ASO in both states.   I got a list of them off the computer.  I would have to buy a bike helmet though, as MD has a helmet law. (yes you can be my mom and sigh).

I am going for Social Work in case nosy minds were wondering, don't know how to cross out nosy and put in enquiring minds.

YEA!!!!! I can now go a whole 6 weeks instead of 4 weeks before seeing Dr.,   I can also go back to work next week.  Unfortunately the plant I was at has no openings so the temp. service I work with is looking for something else.  I am also going to try and get back into peanut butter cup land up in Hershey.

After a discussion with my doctor yesterday.  The decision to move to MD or stay in PA will depend on what my lab results closer to time  are.   I have not gone above a CD4of 70 since being dx'd in Jan. although  I have been UD since March.  Nurse Vampire took her 5 tubes of blood and I should have results by Thurs.

He did say if I move he will help me find a doctor. Since I go to DR. every 6 weeks I figure I will be seeing him at least twice until I start school.

I can only go to Africa if my Cd4 is at that magic number of 200 or higher and has been that way for at 6 months before I go.  It may take the 2 years for it to get to that magic number.

Michelle :)
