Blood Pressure Med safe to take with Truvada and Isentress
« on: November 22, 2013, 06:37:39 pm »
My husband is on Isentress and Truvada. He has also been taking fosinifril and procardia for hypertension. His BP is not being controlled anymore by these meds and they seem to have contributed to his erectile dysfunction.Anyone here take Losartan?Or any others that are less of a problem for ED?
Thanks
Susan

I am on Isentress and Truvada and I have been taking Diovan for blood pressure for the past eight years. As long as my blood pressure is at correct numbers I do not have issues with obtaining erections that last for hours.

My feeling is that it is the uncontrolled blood pressure and not the specific blood pressure medications that are causing erection difficulties, Susan. It's imperative that your husband be persistent and adamant with his doctors on finding the right bp mediation to get his numbers in the appropriate target area. I think once that is done the other issue (ED) will gradually improve.

Has your husband been going in to his doctor about this, or are you just getting readings from a BP monitor that you are using at home. The doctor needs to be resolving this -- just because Diovan works well for me doesn't mean it would for your husband, I suppose. Obviously I am not a medical professional.

Thanks Miss Philicia. My husbands blood pressure has been high the last 3 months at his hiv Dr. appointments but they will not treat his BP now because the clinic is closing due to lack of funding. We are going monday to a new physician here in town and I wanted to have an Idea of what medicine would be alright to take with his hiv meds.We live in a remote area and HIV is not a condition these two small town doctors know much about.I have also been taking his bp here at home and it is consistantly running 136/100 to 152/108.He is 57 now and has had hypertension and been on meds for it since he was 19 years old.Fosinipril and procardia since his hiv diagnosis in 1995.So I do think it is time for a change.

I've seen folks on these forums with taking a variety of blood pressure medications, so it doesn't seem that limiting in terms of HIV medication interactions. Any doctor should have some resource about drug interactions on a computer I suppose, as do most modern pharmacy chains. But you definitely should make that the first order of business considering he's had hypertension since he was 19. I'm sure your new doctor will sort it out.

There's a link somewhere on this web site where you can double check drug interactions yourself but for the life of me I can't locate it. Maybe someone else will come along that can find it.

So I see that you live in Wichita Falls, TX and that has a population slightly over 100,000 people. Is it really that impossible to find a decent HIV doctor?

Yes,there is only on infectious disease Dr. in Wichita Falls. And he is the one we see for his hiv at the Early Prevention Clinic. This clinic is shutting down the last day of december and we will have to find a primary care doctor at the community health center.
