AMG Boston CD Compilation
« on: March 11, 2009, 01:20:10 pm »
I apologise for dropping the ball last year on the AMG cd compilation. No excuse, but with everything I had going on last year, I just couldn't fit it in.

In an attempt to keep this tradition alive, we will again have an AMG cd compilation for AMG 2009.  Due to the length of time for this project, I am requesting everone submit their song choice as soon as possible, but no later than June 15th.  I will also be requesting assistance in compiling the songs onto disk.  If anyone is interested in assisting please feel free to send me a message.

This is your chance to to suggest a song that means something special to you; A song that empowers you and helps you get through the day.  The genre can be rock, pop, country, dance, etc.  Anything as long as it has a meaning to you!

Due to the time and cost involved, please limit your contribution to one song choice each.  If you do suggest multiple songs, your first choice will be used on the compilation.  Multiple choices may be used if time permits.

Rules are simple.  Include the full name of the song and artist.  This will help us easily locate your choice.  If you have a copy of the song you'd like to contribute on your PC and would like to email it to me, please pm me for my email address.  Most importantly, include a brief description of how your song choice touches you.

In an effort to have these completed to hand out at our gathering, please submit your song choice as soon as possible.

Ciao
Dennis

I always hate trying to make this decision.  My emotions and my energy are all over the place.  Not to mention my "insecurity" about what other members may think of my choice.

Having said that, here's my contribution to AMG 09's cd.

For me, the members I've met at AMG, the experiences we've shared, the laughs, the tears, but most importantly the friends I've made here, means I will never be "all by myself".

I love them, I can't wait to see old friends and make new ones, but until then, here's my choice:

I've changed my mind (and reserve the right to do it again--multiple times  :P), but while the sentiment I expressed above is absolutely how I feel, that darn song just didn't feel right.

I wanted something more upbeat and uptempo.

I think the words speak for themselves.

I'm going to live while I'm alive.

So this is what I'd like to submit:

I request that Queen's "We are the Champions" as I believe that Freddie Mercury wrote it for us.

I also like Queen's "Say Its Not True" released the day before World's Aids Day in 2007.

I have both files downloaded and will send them to Dennis when I find them on my desk top that has been giving us a lot of grief lately.

I'm afraid my first choice might be too gritty for some folks--Killing Joke "Love Like Blood"--but it's one I have on CD and can convert to an audio file.

It's just very dark.  But I like songs about blood.  Seems fitting. Like destiny...and if I can explain briefly, 21 years before I found this video on youtube, I made my own video in my head--thanks to LSD and a Walkman--and I was the star.  I was seeing myself years in the future, with long hair, and this vision was interspliced with two skeletons in a passionate embrace, and their decay reversed until it was two beautiful young men making love, and they were me and my boyfriend at the time.

"...strength and beauty destined to decay...so cut the rose in full bloom."

My choice is I Dreamed A Dream, from Les Miserables.  The song tells the story of how life, can make our dreams become our own hell and that sometimes, no matter how we try, "there are storms that we cannot weather"  As dark as the song is, I offer it as a tribute to all of those, that we have lost, because even when you do everything you can possibly can, sometimes it just does not change your future.

Specifically, I offer this in memory of Peter Englehard, a friend, my HIV specialist and poz.  He had brains, beauty and he was an incredibly generous and compassionate man.  In addition to his HIV practice, Peter trained in the use of facial fillers, to help patients overcome the ravages of HIV.  He offered his services for free and worked with the drug manufacturers, to get the drugs for little or no cost and this was just one dream that Peter had.

Peter, had dreams and he fought his HIV with all that he possessed, however, in the end, it did not matter.  I offer this song, to all of those who have passed, because you all had dreams and far too many never had a chance.  I know you dreamed and all I can offer, is that your dreams will live on in others.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yt-IBJpEMzA

I included this version from YouTube, because it includes the lyrics, however, I will forward a copy from the Original Broadway Cast to be included on the CD.

I know there is a song that has the words "Please come to Boston for the springtime"..I know we will be there in the summer, but what the heck.

Dennis,

I am going to go with "The Song Remembers When" by Trisha Yearwood.  Let me know if you have any difficulty locating it.

I have always loved this song.  It is poignant and talks about how our memories are triggered by music.  The line in each chorus is nice "after I had forgotten all about us, the song remembers when!"  It will be a nice addition to this collection.  Sorry it took me so long to decide.

Don't worry about it.  That's OK.  Let's go with choice #2

Jeff Buckley, "Hallelujah"

Where to find it: Jeff Buckley, "Grace" (1994).

If you want to add the Leonard Cohen version, that's OK.

Changing my selection one last time before I begin putting together this year's cd.

This song is more of a reflection of where I am at the moment. She's a phenomenal song writer.
I actually had the pleasure of seeing her in concert twice in the late 90's; Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas and the Roseland Ballroom in NYC. One of the few artists that sound as good live as her recordings.

I'm burning the cd's this weekend. There is still plenty of room on the disc.  If you haven't submitted a song to be included on this years cd, you still have a few hours to post it here.
