Virus Resistant to All Meds?? Chances?
« on: January 14, 2010, 07:29:04 am »
Sleepless nights suck!

Upon doing some Google-ing to find out if HIV/AIDS is classified as a terminal or chronic illness I came across an article stating that there are approximately 20 diff medications to treat what is now referred to as Chronic Illness.  Also mentions that maybe the fact that it's no longer considered terminal has not helped with the prevention of the spread of the virus.  That being said.  What is the likelihood that someone has a virus strain that is resistant to all of the meds available to treat the virus and pretty much has no option of going on meds when his numbers decrease/increase??  I'm still learning forum etiquette, this might belong in the off-topic board, not sure :)

Guy,

I jsted tested poz in November, and had the same worry.

Take a deep breath, and tell yourself that your not going to have some super monster in you.

All i can tell you is, this stressing isn't doing you any good. And once you know have your numbers and have talked with your doctor you'll feel better.
BREATH!!!

All the best with your appointment

Guy,

The chances of that happening are nil.  Some of the newer drugs out there just haven't been around long enough. If the absurd ever happened (which I don't believe can unless someone is really reckless with taking meds) , medication combos can still work to a much lesser degree even if one's virus is riddled with mutations. Certainly, not as well, but then one has the clinical trial avenue.

What you need is a genotype and phenotype  test to determine the most effective meds for you. I'm sure your doc has already done these tests.

Relax,

v

Yep, they do. Work on that aspect of your health and you'll greatly benefit your immune system and your mind. If you're able, try a benadryl (over the counter) 1/2 hour before you'd like to bed down. No TV in the bedroom. Quiet as you can make it. Calm. Music or comedy, not murder or mayhem if you're enjoying media beforehand.

A long-time friend of mine has always said to his children and friends..... " Sleep is your friend."

Best

I was recently diagnoes as well relatively  ::) and my doctor told me that the good news was that I had a wild virus which is not mutant and susceptible to all Meds..at that time I felt he is stupid if he wants me to be happy, but now I know its good news , I think there are much more Med combinations than the virus vrsions , dont worry about this, its an industry that generates $$$ so they will always come up with Meds ...it will remai chronic for a long time  :o
Best to you
I have to admit : the good thing is that from now on;  I have no option but to succeed , still its ok to worry :))

Thanks for all the replies... I guess since I tested positive a lot of my thoughts and literature have been consumed by HIV, I'm just trying to educate myself in small doses but daily.  I guess I feel like I want to be a step ahead with this and be in control.  I have first dr appt on Tuesday so not sure what to expect, but will keep you posted on numbers and dr visit when I get results back!!

Thanks Buds!

Hi Guy,

Instead of googling (and running the chance of reading a lot of outdated or just plain wrong information), why not check out the Lessons found on this website? They're written in plain English and will give you a very good basic grounding in all things hiv. Once you've got the basics down, you'll know old or crap when you see it while googling.

As for what got you googling in the first place, I've always asked the (tongue-in-cheek) question; "is it chronically terminal, or terminally chronic?"  ;D  ;)

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Hi Guy
thanks for replying to my first post the other day. I'm trying to reply to you via personal message but I keep getting a notice "sorry you cant read your personal messages".  So - Im trying reply to you but Im having some technical difficulties. Maybe it's because I have just registered on this site? Any suggestions would be appreciated, meanwhile - thanks for the note, and Im trying to get back to you.
