Title: Re: seroconversion
Post by: jakie on September 09, 2006, 06:42:32 am
I am new to this forum.  Not sure if this is the correct way to ask a q.  But here goes.

I am worried about a sexual encounter 15 weeks ago with a pros.  Went in for a Std panel meaning Hiv/HepB/HepC/Herpes1/Herpes2.  Thankfully, all neg at 105 days after exposure.  Short q:  Is this a definite negative outcome for all?  This forum is great and you are doing a wonderful service to so many.  I hope all of you enjoy MANY years of good health.

Again, I apologize if this is not the correct way to ask a q.  If I am lucky enough to get a response, please post in the 'Am I infected' section.

jakie,

I split your post out of Sacramento's thread into your own thread. Please keep all your additional thoughts or questions in this thread and this thread only. To find your thread when you come here, look under your name in the left hand column of any forum page and click on the "show posts" link.

The tests you took, at the time you took them, are conclusive. The window period for hiv is 12-13 weeks - that's 91 days maximum, and an hiv test anytime after 84 days is conclusive.

You don't mention whether or not you used a condom when you had intercourse. You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL STIs together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with a sexually transmitted infection.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Please also read the Welcome Thread (http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=220.0) and follow the Lessons links found there for further transmission and testing information.

You are hiv negative. Protect your negative status by using condoms. It really is that simple!

Many Thanks for your assurance, Ann.  1 follow up comment and a final q.  I did use a condom so my risk was low.  You mentioned the 91 day window for Hiv.  My final q is this : Is a neg test at 105 days conclusive for HepB/HepC/herpes1 and 2?

I realize this may be outside the scope of this forum so if you cannot answer I will understand.

I am sure living with Hiv is a challenge and i hope you have MANY years of good health.

Thanks, again.

Ann, I am not sure if you saw my follow up q and comment.  Very briefly,  Is a 15 week(105 day) neg test for hepB,hepC,Herpes 1 and 2 a definite outcome?

many thanks for your help.  I saw your reply to the Hiv q and I am so relieved to put that behind me.  I have a feeling I know your answer to the other tests.  I only want to hear it from you.  This is a great forum and you are very kind to help so many so selflessly.

jakie,

I'm just fine, thanks, and so are you. You are hiv negative. Make sure you protect your negative status by using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions. If you haven't already, read through the condom and lube links in my signature line.

Use condoms and avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Just a general info q.

What is longest amount of time you know of for someone testing positive after a previous neg test?  Just curious.

This is a great forum for information.  you guys are doing a lot of good for so many.

Jackie

The information on this subject is tricky to give.

The test have made much progress over the last few years. While there have been scattered reports of seroconversion post 6 months in the mid eighties - mid nineties (sometimes those reports have been a bit sketchy though and involved coinfection with hepC for example) this  is unheard with newer test technologies. It is agreed that with the newer tests introduced around 1998 all but a very small fraction will seroconvert within 6 weeks. To catch the outliers there is still the 13 weeks period in place.

6 months only counts for people with a severely damaged immunosystem such as chemotherapy or organ transplants or if one is a daily druguser for years..

Hope this helps.

Hello, everyone.

I hope all of you are well and enjoying life.  Sweet Annie really helped me out with some good advice and now i am done with the worry and anxiety.  You guys are too nice.  What do you know about a vaccine or cure for Hiv?  Will that happen in our lifetime?
Please be well and safe, everyone.  You are doing great things for a lot of people.

Hello everyone,

I hope all of you are well.  Have you heard any news about the Fda approving the pcr test for Hiv diagnosis?  I am not sure if that is good or not.  Could you tell me your thoughts?  If sweet Annie doesn't see this, tell her I hope she is well and loving life.  She really helped me through a bad time in my life so I am grateful.  For all of you, please stay well and enjoy many years of good health.

jakie,

Yes, I know about that. It is a very specific test only to be used under very specific circumstances, ones we rarely see in this forum.

The test that has been approved is the APTIMA~ HIV-I RNA Qualitative Assay, an in vitro nucleic acid test (NAT) for the detection of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1).

The test, however, is not meant to be used as a stand-alone test for the diagnosis of HIV-1 infection.  A positive nucleic acid test should be viewed as a unconfirmed test result, indicating probable infection, and should be followed up later with traditional EIA antibody testing to confirm infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

This test is only intended for use in definite high risk situations where there is very good reason to suspect the patient has been recently infected. It is not intended for use after a low or no risk situation.

jakie,

Sorry, I was joking more than anything. I probably should have added a :D

If you're wanting to say hi and just be sociable, the best place for that is the Off Topic forum, which is the only other forum you're ok to post in.

If you want to ask additional transmission, risk or testing questions, please continue on in this thread.

i'm with you, sweet annie.  I just hope you are well and enjoying the holidays.  I think of you as a friend even though we will probably never meet.  If i could have one wish, it would be to have a cure/vaccine for Hiv.  Maybe some day.

This is a q for sweet annie.  I know you tell everyone three months is the outer limit for hiv testing.  Does that hold true for herpes testing as well?  I have a 15 week neg for hsv 1 and hsv 2 and would like to know if that is long enough to wait for a definite outcome for hepres testing.

Many thanks, Ann.  I hope you are well and enjoying the holidays with MANY more to come.
