Hepatitis A Shot-One time?

My doc told me that after the first Hep A shot I would need to repeat in 3 months.

A friend of mine was told that he only needed the shot once

Could anyone clarify this for me?

I guess that doesn't clarify the matter.  Maybe the single shot is for HIV- people.

Your friend is wrong - it's a two dose series vaccination.  Either it was administered to him incorrectly, or his memory isn't good.  Ignore him, and be careful listening to his medical observations and recommendations in the future.

both single-antigen hep a vaccines licensed in the US need 2 doses for full coverage - second dose recommended to be give3n 6-12 months after the first

people who aren't able or willing to receive the vaccine for whatever reason (allergies etc) can have a single dose of hep a immune globulin. this can also beused for pre & post exposure prophylaxis - it only offers protection against hepatitis A virus for aroud 3 months though i believe

What about a Hep B series?

When I was diagnosed with hep A in 98 my doc told me that he would want to start the B series when I recovered from A.  Did the series, and I had antibodies six months later., even three years later.  Then, when I enrolled at NIH in January 2006 there was no sign of immunity.  Took a "booster" and it didn't take, either.

Just keep in mind that the immune system is a quirky thing.

I've had to take follow up boosters for B years down the road.  It wears off in some people so you should get re-screened from time to time.  Not sure if A is the same but I assume if it is my doctors have checked for it. 

I know I started all of these vaccines a decade ago or so and my doctors have always been very attentive to the issue.  This should all be part of good comprehensive HIV care at least for gay men.

I had Hep B which I was told self cleared and may have made me an easier target for the virus

Thank you is very informative!  I will send this link to my friend too.  I do no know why he said 1 shot, he might be unclear of what the doctor said.
