Welcome to Do I Have HIV?

Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

hiv exposure?

Yesterday, me and someone else who I just got to know were at a sushi restaurant together, and she went to go to the bathroom. Then when she came back we decided to trade sushi and she used her chopsticks to give me some pieces of sushi.

I thought nothing of it but then later on I thought if she went to the bathroom to change her tampon or maxi pad with blood all over it due to having a menstrual period and then come back and use her chopsticks to hand over a piece of sushi to me, would that be an exposure to hiv since blood would have been transferred from her tampon, to her chopsticks, and then to the sushi she gave me which i ate?

i am only asking because i read that blood is far more infectious than vaginal fluid or any other fluid, and so i thought hiv will last a bit longer in the environment if it is transferred through blood itself. it will last longer but still not too long, but long enough to be able to survive the time from the bathroom to handing over a piece of sushi which i ate.

It's not even a risk. Even if she would have handed you the meat with her bare hands that she had not washed, after using the restroom. Unless you have shared IV works with her or had unprotected anal or vaginal sex, then you were not at risk.

Along with affirming what Rod has said to you, I urge you to read our lesson about transmission. This epidemic is going to be around for a long time and no one can afford to be unknowing about the basics related to HIV.

This time you were absolutely not at risk in any way. Period. End of story.

oh okay thanks... i know that hiv doesn't last long when it is in the outside environment, but i just didn't know how long it exactly lasts outside to be infectious when it is transferred through a medium such as blood.
