Title: Home from the hospital
Post by: Christine on July 21, 2006, 06:24:25 pm
Hi Everyone,
I missed reading all of your posts this week. Last Saturday I started to feel sort of flu-like, and when I checked my temperature it was almost 103. I felt worse on Sunday, fever, chills, sweats, achey. Nothing was bringing down the temp, so I figured I needed to call the doctor. This stuff always happens on the weekend. I got an appointment for Monday, and the Doctor thought it was PCP again. I was admitted to the hospital Monday afternoon. They ran all the blood work, did a chest x-ray...all came back clear.  They decided to do a ct scan on my chest/ abdomen/ pelvis, and that all came back fine.

The doctor did more blood cultures, urine cultures, checked for other viruses. The only thing they found was that my spleen is a little enlarged, which has been an ongoing thing since '93, and my liver values, and bilirubin is increased, but I am thinking that is from the new meds. Not alarmingly high, but higher than normal, and something that needs to be watched. Yesterday, my fever dropped down, and stayed down all day and night. So at this point she thinks it was a short term viral infection that ran its course. It has been a long week, but I am happy to be back home reading everyone posts.

Hi Christine

I am glad you are doing better!   I think many of us have 'huge' spleens.   Mine is so big, my rib cage sometimes feels 'tight'.

Nice to see you on the road to recovery!

Hugs,

Alan

Boy, it's scary when you get sick like that, isn't it?
What otherwise would be a simple viral infection scares the bejesus out of those of us who've experiened PCP.

Our worst nightmare; it's back!

I'm so glad you're feeling better.

Luckily, I never got PCP, but it sure sucks to have to turn on the red light every time we get sick.

Dear Christine...

Just read about your illness, and am so sorry you weren't feeling well! High temps like that are nothing to fool with, so I'm glad to know you went in and had them run those tests.

Hope this finds you on the mend, honey, wish I could send you flowers! (Our 'old' forums let us post roses...sure do miss that!) Oh! I've got a better idea...hold on just a sec....(I'll share my April birthday bouquet with you that Trish & John sent!!) ;D

With lots of love,

Zephyr

Christine:  I am so glad that you are home and on the mend.  Hospitals suck (even though I work in one) but the good thing is that you are well.

About the spleen-thing.  I'd been having issues with an enlarged spleen for, I guess, a couple of years. It wasn't until I went to a hematologist/oncologist that he suggested I see a surgeon.  I went to the surgeon and between he, my primary care doctor, the hematologist, and at least two friends who are doctors (who all reviewed my lab work), the spleen was removed in May, 2005. Also, my gall bladder, just for the hell of it.

The point is that my hematologist suggested that he didn't believe I'd have reliable labs in the past 5 yrs because all the 'good' blood was sequestered in the impaired spleen.  When I was first diagnosed in July, 1994, my t-cell count was 200. It has fluctuated around there for the past 12 yrs.  I have always had an undetectable viral load, however.  Now, my t-cells are climbing and, when they were taken two months ago, they were 355.

Anyway, glad you are out of the hospital! Chris
