Title: my new invention, seeking funding
Post by: texaninnyc87 on January 16, 2013, 12:55:11 am
who wants to fund my new product? its a keychain pill holder that is also a flashlight. maybe this exists already, but i've searched online to no avail.

when i started meds recently my amazing social worker person told me she tells all her new patients to get a weekly pill organizer thing and also some kind of pill holder they can carry around in case, for whatever reason, they cant access their meds at the time when they normally take them. seeing the sense in these two ideas, i purchased both. im on stribild, which is one pill once a day, so the organizer isnt super useful but it'll help me see how many i have left and i can also put my vitamins in it so whatever. i bought a keychain pill holder online for .03 (some deal on buy.com in case you want one) its a little metal tube, perfect for one stribild and a few klonipin (in case i freak out or something). it looks a lot like a mini mag lite. i was thinking, it should just be a flashlight/pill holder. i dont feel comfortable disclosing to everyone just yet, and no one would think twice about my having a flashlight on my keychain. i guess i can tell people the pill holder is for my klonipin but then they'll just think i have crazy panic attacks all the time....
discrete, and multifunctional, pill case/keychain.
thoughts? criticism? cash deposits?  8)

Why worry about sticking pills in one of those contraptions (http://newworldstuff.com/nitro_beam_pill_fob.htm) when you can just insert a cotton ball dipped in poppers and unscrew the cap and discreetly blast off whenever you feel like it?

oh i had a bad incident with poppers and open flames, so i try to stay away from those unless some serious fisting is about to go down.

i've been using a key fob over a decade and think it's a great way to handle the issue of being out of the house when it's time for my meds.

but in response to your issue about taking the meds in public, I'll tell you the same thing I tell lots of people. Do you realize how many people take medications? For all sorts of reasons? Do you realize how rare it is for someone to ask? and how little they really care about the answer? ;D

In the past decade, I think only one person has ever asked and I simply said that they were my daily meds and I laughed off the fact that nearly everyone is on some sort of med or other. Unless you tell someone those are your HIV meds, they will never know. Besides you can always lie. LOL Say they're blood pressure meds. Say you'd rather not talk about your health issues at the table. Politely say it's none of their business. Suggest they're special multi-vitamins. Say they're the only thing that keeps you from going postal and killing people that ask about your medications.  :o ;D

I would suggest that it's some slight internalized stigma that makes you fearful that people will think these are HIV meds. It's this same kind of internalized stigma that makes some people fearful to work an HIV information table because someone might think they have HIV. My advice is to try not to worry so much. HIV is just one of thousands of diseases that plague mankind that requires daily medications. If you don't give HIV so much power, you won't worry so much that someone might ask about your meds. ;)

However I will say that I do like the pill fob/flashlight combo. That would combine some of the things on my keychain and streamline it a bit. ;)

I wonder if there would be a market for a dildo pill dispenser...

This is quite a good way to show your product.. I am comfortable with this one, and i don't freak out.

Its an OK idea, IMO.  I guess the point is that you want your pill holder camouflaged.

But as others have suggested, most HIV+ people just put the pills in whatever and really don't need the camouflage.  I don't carry a penlight around. I want my pill holder to be very small, so if the penlight added and that makes the pill holder bigger, and the pen light is useless.  I dunno.

But some people do carry around such tools. Penlights and swissknives, whatnot. And a guess among those people, there might be some, like you, who also want to discretely carry around whatever kind of pills, or finely ground herbs, etc.  discretely...  8)

So, there might be a market.  Good luck!

I have a high-power mini-flashlight keychain with a tiny usb stick all on a ring that could also be attached to pill holder, but I take too many pills to consider this. I just keep this on my desk if the power goes out and I need to locate where a candle is, and the USB is for when I need a document printed. I no longer maintain a printer in my apartment and just do downtown and have a print center do it for me.

I'm with Ms P in the pill category-take too many.  Good idea though.

I do, however, have a wireless printer I use for my laptop; unless it's numerous pages, then I just use the job's printer.  I got rid of my desktop, at least for now.  Memory full.

I'm not about to replace my super-extra-fierce Alexander McQueen gold skull keychain, bought when I was employed and had money.

Uh he's 25. It's a little different to open up a pillcase in public when you are in your early to mid 20's than  in your 60's like you. It's almost expected behavior in your 60's.

Tex, I like the idea. I would probably purchase one. However you dont want me to invest because everything I invest in crashes :(

My thoughts. Ahem:

Speaking as someone who has about ten different pill containers for different occasions, I'm sure you could sell a few in the back aisles of most pharmacies. I have one from CVS that's a retractable cup/pillbox combo for travel, so why not a flashlight? But these things cost like $1.29 a piece, so there's not a lot of money in it. Not a lot of people are as interested in pill cases as some of us. I also wonder if it's a patentable idea. The first one in these search results from the patent office mentions flashlights and pill boxes, but I got bored halfway through reading it and took a short nap. I think you're in the clear, though. USPTO.GOV (http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-bool.html&r=0&f=S&l=50&TERM1=pill+box&FIELD1=&co1=AND&TERM2=flashlight&FIELD2=&d=PTXT)

If I may: I find it interesting that you have no trouble saying you take clonazepam, but don't want to mention HIV. I prefer admitting HIV over crazy, because I feel more responsible for the crazy, and the stigma is much greater than for something mundane like AIDS.

My discomfort level changed when they started giving me anti-psychotics. Now I'm obnoxiously open about it, mostly because I like to watch people back away when you say things like, "oh, dear, I left my antipsychotic medication at home... Do you have a sledgehammer I could borrow for ten minutes?"

Taking clonazepam for general anxiety disorder doesn't make one "crazy".

How about neuro-atypical?

I prefer a cross between Barbara Hutton and Anne Welles.
