Title: HPV ANAL DYSPLASIA.. IM SCARED
Post by: nyc94 on September 05, 2013, 11:30:10 am
Hello In 2011 I had an uncomfortable feeling in my rectum. I always felt like I had to pass a bowel movement or if I did there was still some stuck. I went to the GI and got a colonoscopy. I had hpv warts on my lining. I got them surgery removed and now 2 years later when I finally got insurance through my job I had to go for a reg check up colonoscopy. Nothing grew back but now he referred me to a proctologist. I have anal lesions from hpv and need to get them laser removed. The doctor told me it will take 2 weeks to heal. Im very scared because the first surgery recovery was painful. They said I have ain2? Or stage 2 or pre cancerous. But the doctor said if it comes back stage 3 I'm going to have to get it cut out. I think he meant the removal of my rectum? Im only 23 yr old and freaking out. Anyone have this situation. I need support . Thank You

Yes, I've had this and continue to get annual check ups. With HPV and high grade anal lesions I'm not big on the word "pre-cancerous" because it freaks patients out. This is a very slow moving medical condition and it would take a long time to become anal cancer in most cases, so as long as you continue to have annual check ups with a proctologist/colorectal specialist you will be fine, because they catch areas and treat them before they can cause problems.

As far as what to expect, I have only had one area treated during the entire decade that I have seen a colorectal specialist. And I also had anal warts surgically removed just like you did. Keeping in mind that the warts were removed for me 15 years ago and it's now kind of fuzzy in my memory, it seems to me that was fairly worse than the issue with the later anal lesion and by a fair amount, but everyone is different so don't take that for anything. And they didn't cut out my high grade anal lesion they treated it with infrared coagulation -- I'll let you google that for an explanation.

Going by your screen name you live in NYC -- which proctologist are you seeing?

My infrared coagulation treatment was back in 2003, so again maybe my memory is fuzzy. I had mine done outside of a hospital in the offices of Stephen Goldstone on W. 23rd St (highly recommended if you ever need another resource, and he's affiliated with Mount Sinai). He prescribed xanax for me to take before the surgery so that calmed me down. I would also recommend scheduling this for a Friday afternoon if you are a 9-5 work schedule sort, and then take it easy over the weekend. Really I just had to be careful to cover my bed linens with a beach towel because it's possible to have some residual bleeding, though I don't recall there being much of it. Then, of course, your first bowel movement will be grossly unpleasant, but after 2-3 days I don't recall anything horrendous. I was back at work on Monday.

Honestly I think you're stressing out too much about it.
