From the April 12, 2019, edition of POZ (online) magazine:

Lede and key paragraph:

People with HIV who switch from taking Atripla (efavirenz/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine) daily to taking the single-tablet antiretroviral (ARV) regimen every other day still maintained a high rate of viral suppression at one year, aidsmap reports....

...The participants were randomized evenly to stay on daily Atripla or switch to every-other-day dosing of the regimen. After 48 weeks, 97 percent of those in the daily-dosing group and 94 percent of the group assigned to take Atripla every second day had a fully suppressed viral load. The difference between these two rates was not statistically significant, meaning it could have been driven by chance.

Interesting to see that side effect rates were similar.
Quote
Regardless of their study group, the participants exhibited comparable rates of cholesterol or triglyceride changes and neuropsychological symptoms, such as sleep quality, anxiety and dizziness. Efavirenz’s association with such neuropsychiatric symptoms has contributed to the drug’s loss of status as a recommended component of first-line treatment in the United States.

All in all reminds me of FOTO study. (5 days on, 2 days off)

This seems like it would be a pretty big deal - it would essentially cut the cost of medications in 1/2.  Also, 1/2 the drugs through the body has to be easier on the body in the long run.

Its interesting that the research is on Atripla, which is no longer a first line therapy.  The cynic in me thinks this kind of research on first line drugs isn't done or is scuttled -- 1/2 the revenue for a few very big drug companies would drive stock prices down pretty quick.

I also remember a study that found that reducing the amount of Sustiva in Atripla from 600 mg to 400 mg did not reduce effectiveness but reduced side effects in study participants, but they've never reformulated it.
Summer, 2007 - &$#@?
November, 2007 - Tested poz, 300,000 vl, 560 cd4
Feb, 2008 - 57,000 vl, 520 cd4, started Atripla
2/2008 - 5/2015 - undetectable on Atripla
May, 2015 - UD, switched to Complera
September, 2015 - UD, 980 cd4, switched to Stribild (Complera interacted with acid reflux medication)
January, 2016 - Stribild, UD, 950 cd4
June, 2016 - UD, 929 cd4

Wow! That's some good progress among the "cure for hiv" stuff that has been going on.
Not only it will cut costs, but say you take it every other day and the box has 30 pills, you will have one bottle per 2 month and won't have to supply every months or so. Hope we get more things like these, going from a day,to week and hopefully to months (that would certainly be the best treatment).

I wonder what that would mean for Odefesy?  It basically has the better versions of Tenofovir, and Efavirenz.

Yeah, haha. It feels like a cure,if it became every 4 months.
Considering other people with other conditions don't have such a good management as we do,with low mortality rate.
