Anal warts... and all!

I had internal anal warts about 10 years ago. They were very resistant and had them treated for months with that freezing spray, then burnt them with acid and finally I had a small surgery in which I think they burnt them injecting stuff in them (not sure, as I said it was 10 years ago).

What I would like to know is: does that mean that I have HPV? Is it something that will stay with me for life even though the warts are long gone? Am I at high risk of colon cancer?

I don't think they know about it at the HIV clinic; should I tell them? Should they run some tests to see what strain I have?

You might want to google for anal dysplasia.

You should see a doctor to get preventive treatment if necessary.

The hpv virus stays with you for life... also you can give the gift that keeps on giving...(hpv)  Now you may never have another sign of anal warts but, as was stated you are canidate to have regular pap smears to check for lesions... not all warts cause anal cancer... best to check with your doctor.

Anal cancer rates up

Doctors are reporting a dramatic increase in new cases of anal cancer in people with HIV.
They say the incidence rate is now almost four times higher in the recent HAART era (1999-2003) than the
pre-HAART period.
Research in France shows rates of anal cell abnormalities and cancer, caused by strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV), have not declined, despite people taking HAART.
Researchers used data from 81,752 patients’ records in the French Database on HIV. During the follow-up period, there were 97 new cases of anal cancer: 9.3 per cent in women; 23.7 per cent in heterosexual men and 67 per cent in men who have sex with men.
People who developed anal cancer were typically in their early forties; more than 40 per cent had received a prior Aids diagnosis and a quarter had never used HAART before their anal cancer diagnosis.
In total, 37 people with anal cancer died. The three-year survival rate was 74 per cent.

Researchers reiterated that there was an “urgent need" to develop anal cancer screening programmes for people living with HIV. TUAB0305

hey newbie newb,

yeppers, hpv is the gift that keeps on giving. once you get it, it never goes away. it can lay dormant in your skin and you could be asymptomatic for years. the good news-  it is harder to pass on when it is dormant but it can still be passed on.

there are many strains of hpv and only a handful cause cancer. generally speaking, the majority of the cancer causing foes are not the strains that produce visible warts. next time you get a wart or any sort of butt exam request a lab test or biopsy for any abnormalities.

yes, you are at an increased risk for getting anal cancer. thankfully, the odds of developing cancer where the sun don't shine is relatively low. just be sure and have your ass checked out  so you can nip any nasties in the bud before they do major damage.

btw, i have heard the hpv/hiv coinfection rate for gay men is above 60%. you are not alone in this field my friend. many of the gay pozzies who have hpv don't know they have it, at least you have a good head start : )

Have your HIV specialists take a PAP smear which will/will not detect any irregular cell structure.  If it comes back positive then make an appointment with a colorectal specialist.
