RARE CASE - RELOCATING BACK to the US from Tokyo

Hello all,

So quick question. I am American and have lived in japan for about 6 years now and got hiv over there back in 2015. I am on their disability insurance plan, and have insurance from my employer, so I pay about 800 a year for my genvoya. I am fully employed and make a salary at my current job.

After 6 years I’ve been thinking of moving home. Specifically to NY. Could someone please advise on how I can maintain my current treatment? I would only move after getting a new job in NY, so I’m assuming I’d have to check with the provided o surer but I’m not sure if in the states HIV disqualifies you for treatment? I have ONlY Japanese health insurance at this time, and don’t think I would qualify for low income if I got my new job. Granted I haven’t made any taxable US income in 6 years.

Additionally, I’m not sure if I could just not say I have HIV and pretend I contracted it after moving to the states?

Any experience or advice with this including places I could reach for more information would be great. I had never considered moving home before as I assumed it would be impossible, but I am starting to really think about it.

Thanks to Obamacare, pre-existing conditions are now fully covered.  You will want to bring 3 months meds with you as it can take a little time to sort it all out.  You will get insurance from the Exchange that was set up in New York.  You will probably want a gold or platinum plan, the States Hiv Program  can probably pick up you insurance bills.
