Being "Dumped" By My Dr
« on: July 24, 2008, 02:04:21 pm »
I just found out my Dr..the one that I have loved and  been with since the beginning in 2003 is gone for good..abruptly for personal reasons.  I am,  to my own shock.. devastated.  I just saw her 2 weeks ago and was to have gotten a physical I need for school next Monday.  I feel as if I have just been "dumped" by someone who is truly an awesome Dr and now I have to start all over again.   So here I go again searching for a great new ID Dr in NYC which I know there are plenty..but it can be hard to find one that is good and that you like.  Oh well...I just don't want to get a new Dr on the rebound.   ;)  I want one that is good, on top of things and that I like and trust.  Oh well..off to find a new one....Joe

I know exactly how you feel.  My dr closed his practice last fall and I had to find a new one.  Be thankful you are in NYC and not middle America, where the pickin's are slim.  I was very unhappy with the dr I found, but went back to confirm my unhappiness.  So after 2 visits to Dr number 2, I searched for another and found one that I am very happy with.

Good luck in your search.

In my 20yrs. of being POZ+ I've had more HIV Doctors than I can shake-a-stick-at.....don't worry, you'll be OK, turst me on this, I should know, it's not the end of the world, or by any means the end of your treatment, so RELAX, you have nothing to frear  ;D Most All Doctors that are GM's know how to treat HIV, and it's taught in Medical school now-a-days, so, just about EVER Doctor can treat you  ;D

The first time I had to switch HIV specialists was after being with my first one 8 years, and it was very unsettling.  I've now switched 4 more times since then over the span of the last 7 years and it's gotten easier.

So basically it's something we all must encounter at some point.  But you're right, you live in NYC and you have more resources than just about anyone so you'll be fine.  Hopefully you have local HIV+ friends who can give you personal recommendations.

Hey Joe,

Sorry about the doc.  If you're not already a member, join SINNYC ( Strengh In Numbers) . It's a yahoo group ( social and support) . There have already been postings regarding NYC doctor recommendations and you can search through those. Or you can just send out your own post. Great group of guys.

Good Luck

Paul

Sorry Joe,

That situation sucks....Finding a competent ID doc is not so hard. Finding one who will be a partner is tougher. But I'm sure there are number of those in NYC. Good luck!

Thanks to everyone for the support and thank you Paul for the link.  I was just shocked at how much it bothered me.  As someone mentioned she was not just my Dr but my partner.  She would call me in between my appointments just to see how I was doing and was extremely thourough.  Oh well.  I am seeing the nurse practitioner that works at the same office on Monday for my physical but will be looking for a new Dr.  The nurse practitioner that works there gets on my nerves.  Last time I saw him he admitted he was hungover and I had to remind him 3x I was there for a flu shot but I have to get this physical out of the way for the new school I am attending.  No worries.  The good thing is maybe I can find a Dr that is more convenient to get to.
