Oral Sex Risk and Thanks
« on: January 19, 2017, 11:38:26 am »
Hello, all.  I am new to this Forum.  I found it several days ago while I was stressing about possibly being infected with hiv.  I had last been tested 2 years ago and since that time I had 10 or so encounters with various men whom I met online.  These encounters were always the same: they performed unprotected oral on me, while I performed unprotected oral on a few of them.  The last encounter that I had was 3 months ago.

The reason that I started to stress about hiv is that I have been sick for a few weeks and unable to shake this upper respiratory ailment.  This Forum, and its experts like Jim and Wade, provided enormous relief to me with objective information based on their experience and education.  As a result, I was confident that I did not put myself at risk and felt good about going ahead to do an Oraquick test on Tuesday of this week.  Even though I was confident, I was of course still anxious about it.  I tested negative.

Yesterday I went to the doctor's about my illness and it turns out that I have a sinus infection (something I am prone to) that developed after a cold.  I received appropriate meds and am already feeling better.

I am sharing this experience for a few reasons: 1) to thank the moderators for the great work that they do; 2) to give an example of how good of a job they do and how authoritative their judgments are; and, 3) to perhaps offer some relief to others who worry about exposure through oral sex.

Cheers all.

On behave of all us, Betty, Andy, Wade, Patrick and me, you're welcome.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, every time, no exceptions.

Keep in mind that some sexual practices which may be described as ‘safe’ in terms of HIV transmission might still pose a risk for transmission of other STI's, so please do get fully tested regularly and at least yearly for all STI's including but not limited to HIV and test more frequently if unprotected intercourse occurs

Also note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms and the only way of knowing is by testing.

More information on HIV Basics, PEP, TaSP and Transmission can be found through the links in my signature to our POZ pages, this includes information on HIV Testing

Kind regards

Jim

You're welcome.

To summarize your original issue/concern and its resolution:

Receiving unprotected oral sex is not a risk for HIV infection.

Performing unprotected oral sex is a theoretical risk for HIV infection, provided the person giving the oral sex has open wounds in his or her mouth (i.e., "meth" mouth).

Unprotected oral sex of any type, however, is a risk for other STD's/STI's.
