Sharps injury at work?! Advice
« on: March 21, 2016, 05:45:43 pm »
I was inserting a canula earlier (doctor), missed the vein so pulled out and in doing so managed to stab myself (through a pair of gloves). So careless. I was then called over to another patient due to an emergency. I took glove off washed wound with soap..and aided this other critical patient. Everything was going 100mph so didn't think to raise it.

The patient was assumed negative or unknown HIV status.  She was muslim given birth to child not to long ago. No symptoms to suggest high viral load. By no means high risk exposure. Just concerned and annoyed. All up to date with hep b jabs ect. I'd hope you would agree that PEP isn't required. Just further tests in 4 weeks and prehaps 13weeks?

Hi

On a side note I hate having cannulas put in and/or removed.

So as for you risk well most (If not all) health care settings where you would be working with sharps would have protocols in place for possible exposure to BBV and/or any sharp injuries usually including taking prophylaxis. I would suggest checking them to make sure your up-to-date with the current protocol where you are working.

Try to not beat yourself up too much, the reason healthcare settings have needlestick and sharp injury protocols in place is it does happen no matter how careful people are.

General Guidelines for HIV are to test at 6 weeks past any incident and then at 13 weeks to confirm the result.  You can read about testing here:HIV Testing

All I can point out is if you decide to take PEP, it should be started immediately after possible exposure, waiting no more than 72 hours. You can find some additional information on PEP here: PEP and PrEP

If you do decide to take some form of PEP the guidelines are test at 6 & 13 weeks post finishing the PEP course.

Kind regards

Jim

Thank you for your time replying. Just needed to be told right thing to do. I'll give occupational health a call tommorow to sort bloods out. In UK its not routine to start PEP unless its seen as a high risk exposure ( IV drug user, known positive status ect).

Great forum :)
