I have noticed that some folks on here have a strong and delicate, refined taste for music. And since we come from just about any part of the globe, it would be nice to get a taste of all the different styles and goûts!
I will add videos whenever I feel like doing it. Enjoy! And feel free to expand the list.

One of my favourite cities in the U.S. is New York City. Whenever I miss The Big Apple, I play this song:

You are right, the first time I went to NYC I was really scared. Then, when I lived in there during the early 80s, I saw a guy being shot right at the subway entrance next to my place --- and I did not live in Bronx! That was one of the reasons I left the city... Too bad Giuliani arrived on the scene too late for me!

"Rai" is one of my preferred styles of music. Especially when it is danced like this! Now, the way guys dance Rai in the Arab world has nothing to do with being homosexual. The best Rai dancer I've ever seen --- in Bali (Indonesia) --- was a father of six, happily married and, after he danced, you really would think someone else danced in his place...!

Hi Val - Yeah, I'm glad you took that as a 'sign' to move to a safer place. Signs are all around us if we open our ears, eyes and hearts. And since I'm talking about Brazil, the very first time I went to Brasilia I was taken aback. The city was inaugurated in 1963 (year of my birthday) and was the pride of the nation. I recall being very impressed and breathless with all this innovative architecture, for I was a teen-ager! Everything was spotless and harmoniously built. However, I was also a little rebel without a cause at that time...

So, I wandered off to the back of it all to see the places the guide wouldn't show us!
I did exactly the same thing in East Berlin just a few years later, and believe me, I had the same feelings and impressions!

Pierre Bergé (Yves Saint Laurent) and Line Renaud (especially) are the ones in the fore front every year. A few years ago, Line Renaud invited several French artists and singers to help... The Tropicalia Movement was a response by several Brazilian artists to the Military Junta in Brazil during the 1960s. Yes, Johnny, I did read it in Portuguese --- Verdade Tropical --- and understand what you are saying. However, you cannot compare the Brazilian Junta to the Spanish régime of Zapatero, right?

Oh Daniel,
This video brought back some fond memories! In fact, I remember Natalie from a famous Aussie TV Serie that I wouldn't miss for the world: ""Neighbours!"" I think it was shown on BBC One. And if I am not mistaken, she started her artistic career in that programme. Some years later, I remember seeing her face all over Paris for a L'Oreal outdoor publicity...

I agree entirely with Alex. What a nice video especially at the end with the synchronization of the singer and the artist doing the Mime!

Well, it is working just fine in my laptop! By the way, this does happen to me as well from time to time... What I do is just enlarge the screen and it works every time. You see, I was already blaming my computer --- a Siemens/Fujitsu --- thinking this kind of stuff happened only to me!

I just came back from a fifteen-day trip that took me to Madrid, Barcelona and Tivoli --- outskirts of Rome --- where I rediscovered the marvellous and always very impressive "" Villa Adriana"", the Emperor Hadrian Summer retreat.
Needless to say, my iPod followed me around!

At Tivoli, be at ""La Villa d'Este"" or at the Emperor's den (Villa Adriana) as I call it, I listened to some classics of the Italian pop/rock scene with some Aussie music. Some excerpts/examples here:

Two years ago I went to Turkey and spent two weeks in beautiful, awesome Istambul. And I was so amazed with what I saw, what I ate, the people and the music, of course, that I could hardly believe why I waited for so long before getting acquainted with such marvellous and enchanting a culture!
During that trip I discovered Tarkan who is a star beyond any Westerner imagination in Turkey. And today I was just remembering the good times I had in Constantinople!

It is interesting that you mention it being difficult to be openly gay in Israel. I met a grad student here at Washington University in St. Louis a couple of years ago from Israel. He indicated that it was difficult. Yet, he is now at the University of Haifa and is planning on organizing a GLBT organization next year.

Thanks! Listen, to tell the truth I've never been to Israel myself even though I am dying to visit the country! However, I do have several friends who have relatives in there and go to Tel Aviv three times a year. And they are the ones telling me it is not easy and not well-tolerated to be openly gay in Israel these days.
Now, keep in mind that Tel Aviv is one of the most progressive, liberal cities in that country! I try to imagine the situation in the more provincial towns...!

And since we're discussing homosexuality, let me tell you something very interesting about Brazilian music. There are at least ten Divas in Brazil. I posted some days ago something about one of them --- Eliane Elias. They are stars like you cannot imagine!
What is curious about female singers in Brazil, though, (especially the most famous ones) is that they are all lesbians. And quite frankly, I've never seen anything similar in any other country!

Tonight I am listen to Simone. She is just huge in Brazil. And it is a pity that You Tube does not have most of her hits! Go figure!

They were both known as the "Enfants terribles" of Brazilian music. Cassia died of an overdose some years ago, and Edson is one of the most rebels of all Brazilian singers. It is difficult to find his videos on any media, since most are censored. MTV Brazil, for example, just censored his last hit implying it was ..."shocking" for youngsters!
