am i worried no reason??
« on: August 15, 2011, 04:24:35 pm »
Hi and in advance i am sorry for my English it is not my native language..

Some days ago (2 to be presice) a friend gave me a piece of food directly to my mouth and for a strange reason i am worried that he might had an a small cut or wound on his fingers that bleed on the food that he gave me to eat... Is there a slightly (1 / 100000000000000000000000000000000000) chance he transmitted h.i.v. to me? (i don't know his h.i.v. status and i didn't saw any wounds on his fingers or bleeding so it is more an if question), the food he gave me was hot and juice (don't know if it has anything to do) i have read and i consider my self well informed about h.i.v. and the way it is transmitted but for some reason my mind stuck. Was i in any exposure? Do i need to test my self (meaning for this incident)? Honestly is there a reason that i am loosing my night sleep? Looking forward for your answer...

There is absolutely no risk for HIV in that scenario.

HIV is difficult to transmit and does not survive in the environment. You should know that if you go out to eat, there is always a large chance that your server, your cook, might be HIV positive.

I urge you to read our LESSONS section on HIV transmissio, so that you can be a better informed friend.

Thanks for your answer, my concern was if he actually had bleed on the piece of food if it could contaminate me?  And yes i think that it's just pure drama but i need a "confirmation" of some sort that i am not in any risk.. so you advice me to relax let it go and go on with my life cause there wasn't any exposure even if he bleed on the piece of food? Thank you for your time.

What sort of confirmation do you require?

We can discuss the epidemiology of the HIV pandemic, the fragile structure of the virus itself, the receptor particles that are specifically designed to latch onto Cd4 cell structures, the impact of any environmental exposure on HIV, or the fact that in thirty years' of study with humans and primates, no one has even been able to make HIV transfer from food in the lab.

Where do you want to start?

I suggest perhaps you start with reading the LESSONS section on this site.

Alemar,

Hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit virus that is primarily transmitted INSIDE the human body, as in unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse where the virus never leaves the confines of the two bodies.

Once outside the body, small changes in temperature, and pH and moisture levels all quickly damage the virus and render it unable to infect. For this reason, hiv cannot be transmitted from objects in the environment, and that includes food that may have been bled on.

You have not had a risk for hiv infection.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together.

To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT NEED TO TEST OVER EATING FOOD, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Alemar,

If you're not having unprotected intercourse outside your marriage, then you do not need to worry about hiv.

Hi again an incident happened today and made me a bit worried and i wanted some advice on the situation i had, today was the day i gave blood (i am a blood Donner), all went OK but at the hospital i give blood in the room there are 2 people giving blood at the same time, at the person that was giving with me at the same time something went wrong and some blood was spilled on the adhesive plaster (basically on the inside base) that is used to keep the sterilized gauze on the needle wound when the donation is over, the doctor used a sterilized gauze to wipe it and from what i can tell after i finished (3 to 5 minutes) later he used a piece of the adhesive plaster that i mentioned before to keep the sterilized gauze on my wound, i am sure there was no blood drop that i could see and i had no other wounds scratches or what ever in my arm, was i in any risk? or i should start smoking again (i try to quit it, 2 months smoke less) cause i am over reacting all time no reason?? i forgot to mention that the adhesive plaster the doctor used to cover the sterilized gauze was above 2 sterilized gauze.  From what i can tell even if there was a blood drop that could have touch my wound after 3 to 5 minutes it couldn't give me h.i.v. but i would like your opinion on what i described to you. Was in any risk??? Thank you in advance.

Alemar,

I suggest you seek out a therapist with whom you can discuss your irrational hiv fears. Nothing you have brought to us has been a risk for hiv infection.

We will not allow you to use this forum as a substitute for therapy. If you read the Welcome Thread before posting like you're supposed to, you will have read the following posting guideline:

Quote

Anyone who continues to post excessively, questioning a conclusive negative result or no-risk situation, will be subject to a four week Time Out (a temporary ban from the Forums). If you continue to post excessively after one Time Out, you may be given a second Time Out which will last eight weeks. There is no third Time Out - it is a permanent ban. The purpose of a Time Out is to encourage you to seek the face-to-face help we cannot provide on this forum.

Please consider yourself warned!

Ann thank you that y answer to me that straight and i am working it and i believe in the good way, i just have a question cause i was discusing it with a friend and we almost argued, the question is simple can be HIV transmitted if some one that is talking to you spits (u know the gross talking spit) in your coffee and u drink it ? lets say the coffee is cold and y drink it directly (meaning without a lot of time between the spit and drinking), and assuming the guy had some bleeding gums, is there any HIV risk? I see none, but your answer is always precious, thanks again for your time and helpfull advices you give.

HIV is not transmissible through saliva, no, not even if the guy spat directecly into your mouth and even if he had bleeding gums. Or any other variation you put on to saliva such as in food or beverages.

Ann warned you about coming back here with more what ifs. I am giving you that 28 day Time Out she warned you about. HIV will not be a problem for you as long as you always use condoms for vaginal and anal intercourse and avoid sharing needles intravenously if you do drugs.

If you can't get over this unwarranted concern about HIV then get yourself some professional help with the problem. We can't address that in this setting.

HIV is not your problem.
