Cold Turkey.. the delux edition..
« on: May 17, 2012, 03:36:59 am »
Hi folks,

Haven't been back for a while, so just dropping by to say hi to old friends and for this bit of update.

So after a few false attempts since diagnosis I really planned and worked out a strategy to quit smoking cold turkey about 2 months ago. Didn't work out the first few weeks as I quickly relapsed, but then about a month ago I packed up whatever strength I managed at that point and went for broke.

I still won't call myself an ex-smoker yet, but yesterday was my one-month anniversary for being smoke-free.

Other than sharing this bit of good news - just wanna know if anyone's successfully quit (be it using aids like patches, or meds like chantix) has had to deal with issues like tiredness and muscle aches after quitting. I have been told that these 'side effects' are to be expected, and with more exercises they would pass like all other withdrawal symptoms. But are there ways to boost your energy level - supplements, juicing, etc?

Hugs, Shaun

I haven't quit but cut down to something like once in a couple of days or less (on average). Most obvious side effect for me was a huge surge in appetite and resulting massive weight gain, especially arounf my midsection. I've ballooned up like nothing before. But in my case this can also be ascribed to a virtual halt in exercise around the same time.

So please do not discontinue working out!

Congratulations on the one month anniversary.  Stick with it, your doing fine.

These are two, of the latest ads, put out by the CDC, for anti-smoking.

Their pretty graphic, if you feel like a cigarette , watch one of these :

Congrats - I know this is really hard to do.  I quit 1 year ago this month (dont remember the exact date).  I just went cold turkey and so far so good.  There are many times I think about having one but know I will just go right back.  It helped alot when most bars went non-smoking around here.  At the same time I also gave up caffeine.  It did take some time adjusting but doesnt bother me now.  Just have to fight that urge...I think it gets easier the longer you go.

Good Luck!

Hello Shaun,
Congrats and hang in there. I quit cold turkey nearly eighteen years ago. I had no physical withdrawal symptoms while the poison was getting out of my body. Mentally I had a few.
I have encouraged many to successfully quit since I did. Week six is was usually the toughest for most of my now ex-smoking friends. If you feel the urge to smoke get up and take a walk or eat some fruit. Stay away from sugary / salty snacks. My best advice is to change the routines associated with your smoking habit.
Also don't be surprised when you start hacking up the crud that is in your lungs. This is normal.
When you beat this nasty deadly habit you will be so proud of yourself. Your ID doctor will be happy as well.
And another plus is all the $$$$$$ that you will be saving!
You can do this!!!
