When I had my last appt. with my ID Dr. last week, he told me that I have hypertension.  Now, my blood pressure's always been on the higher side of normal, but never 'high'.  When I was in my early teens, I reduced my sodium intake quite a bit, and my B.P. was normal in a short time.  In my 30's, I started exercising a lot every day.  I did it for health reasons, initially, but damn, I sure was in shape!  These days, I don't exercise as much, but I still do 30 minutes of stairstepping 5 days a week, but maybe that's not enough now.  Last week, my  B.P. ranged from 150/90 to 142/90 while I was at his office.  I was sure that it would drop while I was there due to being stressed, and it did, but not much.

I remember reading somewhere that some of the a.r.v.'s were linked to hypertension, but I can't find that now.  Have any others had blood pressure issues soon after starting HAART?  I guess what I'm wondering is if my hypertension is related to HIV / AIDS or just age.  He put me on a low dose of Lisinopril.  I told him that I wasn't sure which bothered me more - the Lisinopril or the Atripla.  I mean, I've just sorta gotten used to the HIV thing.  I'm not ready to deal the the normal issues people have when they get older!

I suffer from hypertension at the ripe age 29.  My BP back in Feb was 170/90 and had been on steady rise prior to that.  Doc's put me on Altace 5mg, which has led to me not being able to take a really deep breath and I have the ACE inhibitor cough now, which really sucks.  I feel asthmatic, but I don't have asthma.

Hey David,

Well, that sucks. Sorry to hear about your blood pressure problems.

I know you know the drill - reduce salt and more exercise - because you have already done them.

I guess the only thing I can offer is you need more sex. At least that is fun exercise.  ;)

Hey David

Sorry to hear about the blood pressure. Does it exist by itself or is there anything else going on? I'm thinking about your kidney function and what your creatinine it doing and whether you have protein in your urine. Both HIV and HAART are quite hard on your kidneys - maybe this article might help?

If it exists by itself, it may be that it runs in your family. If it makes you feel any better, hypertension is so common a GP I studied under made a pretty convincing case to me once for putting ACE inhibitors in the water supply! Hope it works for you.

My grandmother (on my Dad's side) had slight hypertension, but my dad doesn't.  My mom has low blood pressure.  Mine's almost always been in the higher range of 'normal'.  I was curious if anybody else had seen it rise due to HAART, but I guess that's kinda hard to tell for sure, as age can play a factor in hypertension, too.  One thing that really bothers me is the fact that Adderall can / does increase b.p.  I'm NOT going to be happy if I have to give that up.  I think my Dr. knows that and is kind of saving dropping that as a last resort.  Damned ADHD!  My kidneys seem to be fine, at least the last tests indicate so.  It was kind of nice seeing that all my numbers, besides HIV related, were good.  We'll check again in a few weeks and see how the old body is holding up to all these meds.  Thanks for the link and info.

As someone who suffers from hypertension, it's fairly easy to pop a pill and get it under control with no adverse effects.  I went from BP of 210/110 down to a controllable 120/70 through the use of a beta blocker and calcium blocker.  It really, really works.

My blood pressure seems to be up since starting my meds.  My cholesterol and triglycerides are out of control and I am sure it has something to do with my blood pressure too.  Luckily I had low blood pressure all my life so it is normal now.

I have been on 10mg qd of lisinpril since Jan 06, and it has kept my BP in the 125/80 consistently since then.  In addition to strength and cardio training, I also do yoga and tai qi 3 times a week to help reduce stress.  The other major improvement in assisting with my BP has been reducing sodium and increasing potassium in my diet.

HIV doesn't give us a free pass on other health issues as we age.  The best thing we can do is get ahead of them.

You probably know this, but one needs to be careful about adding any potassium while on Lisinopril.  In fact, the drug info sheet I got with my Rx specifically says to monitor blood potassium levels, as it can cause 'unsafe levels'.  If one's not on Lisinopril, potassium can help lower blood pressure.  I do the cardio exercise (gradually increasing it), am lowering sodium intake (like I did years ago), and cutting down on alcohol and caffeine.  I think yoga would be a good addition to reduce stress, too.  Thanks for those suggestions.
