Title: Hurricane Ike blows through Louisville
Post by: woodshere on September 15, 2008, 08:25:29 pm
Louisville occasionally get remnants of hurricanes, typically rain. However, Ike roared through Louisville with not rain but winds that left a mess in his path.  Of course nothing like the coast, but has caused problems throughout the city and unfortunately the loss of a couple of lives.  Yesterday afternoon there were over 250,000 without power.  And by the looks of the clipped utility pole still hanging mid air outside my apartment and the transformer box in the middle of the road I will be without power for a little longer. Lots of trees down on houses, cars and blocking many roads.  As a matter of fact I am still pretty much locked in my location as the roads have yet to be cleared.  With not much to do I have made good use of the time learning a few things I thought I would share that might help others.  I found out my electric clock radio does have back up battery power, but with no batteries no news and the couple of flashlights in the junk drawer are pretty useless without batteries.  They always advise having some bottled water around in case of a major disaster. This of course wasn't a major disaster but got me to thinking and bottled water in my house is about like condoms, don't use 'em, don't drink it, don't buy it.  And like many Americans my cell phone has become my only source of phone.  Works great until the battery goes down like yesterday at noon.  Of course I did have my work cell which was fully charged to call people.  The only problem I don't know anyone's number because they are in my cell phonebook which I couldn't use, because of course the battery was down.  So tonight I am going to write important numbers on a piece of paper (charged phone at work) to carry in my wallet.  In the next day or so when I go to the grocery to restock the fridge and freezer I am going to buy some bottled water and of course BATTERIES.  Never hurts to be prepared (advice I seldom follow, hence me being here.... :))

We haven't really been blown much here in coastal NC this season... at least by a hurricane!  As to being prepared, I think many folks in coastal areas are well prepared.  In our case, we have two generators, city water, natural gas for water heating and cooking, car batteries with lighter adapters to plug cell phones and other items needing recharging, inverters to hook to those batteries for small oscillating fans (for use during a storm prior to firing up a generator), etc.  We've been hit hard here in the past from storms and have learned how to minimize the impact of a major one.

I hope things get straightened out there soon.

Ike visited Ohio too. We just got our electric back at 9:30 monday evening, it was off for 36 hours and did it ever do some damage.

We lost power for about 20 hours. This morning there are 200+ schools in Central Ohio cancelled for the day.  500,000 statewide still without power and 6 deaths statewide. I spent yesterday picking up branches out of the yard. With several full grown trees we got lucky. Trees down, shingles and siding ripped off houses all over the neighborhood.

Yep, it sure did! I am in Louisville too but my power just came back on a little bit ago. I live in a pretty rough area so there was a lot of looting going on. Several storefronts were broken into and even the jewelry store next to my job which is a few blocks away. I have never seen anything like this, it is pretty nuts. A tree fell on my neighbors house and crushed their car. I was sitting on my porch in the midst of the winds and got up to come inside for something and not two seconds later a tree came ripping through my front porch. I received a funny call yesterday though, while my power was out. It was the good ole electric co telling me that my power would be cut off tomorrow if I didn't pay the $560 that was due. Seems like they should have had bigger fish to fry don't you think?

Mercy... its called buy a generator... to run the basics in the house. I am also debating about putting solar panels on my roof but, I may run into problems with the historic commission here.  I have been debating whether to build new but, at present our economy is such a mess I'm just drawing up plans. Its awful to be without air condu... and lights in the deep south... the phone I can live without!

Most any generator will easily run a smallish window A/C to cool a bedroom (you can store it in a garage, closet, etc), 'fridge, freezer, lights, and fans.  Although it's possible to get a really big generator to power the whole house, it doesn't take much of one to power the 'essentials'.  FWIW, the most recent one I bought was $150 after rebate, so it's not a totally extravagant purchase and can easily save the purchase price in preventing spoiled food.  Also, back in '96 we had two hurricanes a few weeks apart.  I happened to mention to my insurance company that I'd purchased a generator.  They offered to pay me 1/2 of the price I paid and I could keep it or full price and they would take it.  Their reasoning was that $300 (half the purchase price) for a generator was a lot less expensive than replacing a refrigerator, freezer, and rotten food.

No, dear, you heard it wrong.  It was Ike doing all the blowing.

Here are some good (well, not "good" as in positive) large format photos of Hurricane Ike damage... with this week's financial meltdown this has all been a bit lost in the news:

Yeah I seen those photos on another forum. Great picts!
Being the animal lover that I am, my heart goes out to that lost little crock.
Hope he/she made it across the street ok.
People sometimes don't realize how animals are confused and displaced
too during fires and storms. A wild animal goes thru the same fears as humans,
seeking survival and a return to normal.
And that one house left standing. Talk about random luck.

I think you're referring to the one house with NOTHING around it, not the one with all the debris.  If so, hubby saw something about it that had to do with it being built to survive a Cat 5 hurricane.  If that's the case, that should be the standard for near-ocean building.  Living at the coast, we've often joked that the only ocean-front homes that should be allowed are mobile homes.  When they're damaged, they'd be pulled out and replaced (if they hadn't already been washed / floated away).  Those folks aren't the ones that I feel bad for; it's the regular every day people who often really can't afford to rebuild (if they owned) or are SOL of they rented.
